As far as slugs go - I don't see the point, unless for longer range. They give up the main advantages of the shotgun - simultaneous delivery of multiple projectiles, and the ability to more easily hit a moving target. Even at longer ranges, a rain of buckshot pellets is probably going to deter all but the most suicidal BGs.
Not so. Yes they'll get you distance. But with these specialized loads, they add some versatility that buck can't. If the point in time comes that I'm forced to make the decision to pull the trigger...I'm not trying to deter at that point, I'm stopping the threat. Yes buck will do that too in a heartbeat. But at HD distances, there is NO SPREAD and there is no advantage of multiple projectiles. This slug lets me accomplish anything buck will do including avoiding the issue of collateral damages [they don't over penetrate like others can] PLUS have the ability for distance if the need arises. In my situation, with the saferoom setup that I have and some areas that have abnormal distances that the typical HD senario...there is a need for these slugs.

I have 00, #1, and #4's for my HD shotty. 00 buck is the best overall but the #4's are really great for certin applications....ie less penatration in an appartment complex enviroment.

I believe the #4's would do you just fine.

I've always leaned towards 00, but a breakdown in communication just bought me some #4. Maybe they are good for something? Otherwise, I'll just shoot them up at the range I guess...

9 pellets of .33 inch stuff versus 20something pellets of .25 inch stuff? The box calls for just a smidge over 1300fps.
I use #4 for turkey hunting and 00 for HD.

I use # 2 & # 4. Haven't found a problem with either. Now, 00 is good if you want to shoot thru the door.

I have always used 00 buck for my HD Mossburg 500, either Federal or Winchester Tactical Reduced Recoil. Because my house is not brick and is close to others, I decided to try some #4 buck just to see how it would pattern. I bought some Rio #4 buck from Ammunition to go and ,to my surprise, the pattern seemed to be as tight if not tighter than the the Winchester Tactical 00. I didn't actually measure it, but at a range of 7 yards, most of the #4 rounds left a single hole 3 to 4 inches across with a couple of flyers within 6 inches

I actually prefer smaller pellets for my HD shotgun. I figure it this way...any load whatsoever is pretty much going to be deployed as a solid mass of lead at the distances which you are likely to encouter in the average home. As I live in a fairly populated area, my concern is collateral damage should I not hit my intended target. Smaller shot made of lead would tend to shed its energy quicker going through walls. I used to use #4 turkey loads. Now I keep #8 birdshot in a reduced recoil load in the shottie. If I lived in an area where the neighbors weren't so close to one another, I would probably go to 00 buck or #4 without hesitation.

Try these: Polyshok, Inc.

When a wounded deer is shot from a distance of 5-10 feet the wound cavity is ENORMOUS but it never passes through to the other side. It is like having a soccer ball sized hole in the front and absolutely no damage in the rear.
