Not so. A 20 ga. will recoil equal to a 12 ga. if it is a lighter youth model.
less mass = more recoil. There was a time when I wouldn't be caught with a wimpy .410. After shooting a friends youth 20 ga. and considering a woman may wish to protect herself also, I now am firmly in the camp of a .410. Mossberg even calls it their "Home Defense" shotgun.

Only because of the shape. Lead is lead. But they are moving at the same velocity as the pellet from a 12 ga., there are simply fewer of them.

If I come upon a good used Mossy in .410, with a P/G, it will be mine, just to keep by the bed.

I think that the Mossy 590 makes for a pretty good home defense weapon. I stick to 00 Buck...like to pack lots of it.

and...if I need to reach out and touch in my neck of the woods....there's always ol Bessy....

I LIVE in GA too...but I moved down from NY!! I'm with you on NASCAR,the Rebel Flag(although..I'm liking the REBEL,as opposed to the Confederate aspect, more lately with what's going on in DC!!),but I do like country music(most of it!). Anyway, ..that Mossberg should do the trick. Look into a shorter(Hogue 12" L.O.P)stock and you should be golden!! Good Luck !!

PS.> I drive a pick-up...does thta count???

I dont know

These tricked out shotguns look great. I would love to have one. But my two cents is this. God forbid anyone of us have to shoot and kill someone, I would hate to be in court, and have an overzealous prosecutor wave this shotgun around in from of a jury while trying to paint us as just itching for trouble with our "Assault shotgun". I would rather my attorney be showing my 30 year old Remington 870 Wingmaster, and painting me as just trying to defend myself. Just my thoughts.

Ahhh...gotcha. Thought you were comparing buckshot pellets to handgun bullets. Lots of folks do this, because they are similar in diameter - but forgetting the pellets are lighter in weight due to their shape (round vs conical).

Still think a 20 g with a recoil-absorbing butt pad would be a better bet than a .410, but respect that for some folks, the .410 might be a better option.

My wife shoot a Mossberg 500 Bataam youth model in 20 gauge and can handle it well. 20 gauge #3buckshot with 20 shot per shell is tough when it is coming out the barrel of her little shotgun. It patterns very well and from the 22in. barrel and full choke which gives it very good range.

Boys don't mess with mommy when she got her shotgun out it could make for a very bad day!!!!!!

I would go for 12 ga because of the availability of ammo pure and simple. The stock can be modified/replaced to fit the stature of the shooter.

I think any good pump will work and personally think the standard stock is best for the standard HD gun.

I think a shotgun is a big gun to use in close quarters like hallways and door ways so I wouldn't use it unless it had a light on it and I was hold up in a room. For anything else I'd much rather have a good handgun and light. Because of the layout of my house I HAVE to go to my children and that's easier to do with a handgun and light.

Just an extra thought; Shotgun ammo is bulky. I don't think that factors into this but for me, I might want a 16" barrelled lever action loaded up with 10 .38 specials.

Penetration: it's simple, you can't have your cake and eat it too. If it stops a man it'll go through walls. You want a bullet to go as far into the intended target as possible without exiting. It's that simple (even though that's not simple). That maximizes the opportunity to stop the threat in the shortest amount of time provided you've placed the round where it belongs.

Any decent 12 ga pump will work; it's all about what fits. I'd also want the shortest allowable barrel length and would take it to a gunsmith to get it done if you had to.

I think a good solution is to pick up a standard 870 pump w/wood furniture; buy a cheap extra barrel and have it cut to legal length.

i wouldn't worry about a tube extension. You hear alot about capacity buy other than gangs going at it, how often have you ever heard of a self defense shooting where they shot more than 2-3 times? I think capacity is over emphasized. 5 rounds plus some in a sock or in a grab and go bag is okay.

Keep it simple.

Also you have to consider ease of access for any true HD gun. How quickly can you get to it if it's needed? And how secure is it?

Good things to think about.

Think outside the box. You like the shotgun with a stock, then say it is too big for H/D close quarters. I agree.
That's why my Mossberg 500 has a pistol grip.

The safety on the Mossberg 500 is mounted on the receiver thus, adding a pistol grip is no problem.
I use the Knoxx (now Blackhawk) breachers grip and it is easy to shoot.
