On a different tack I suggest a SKS w/ a stock upgrade. It's in 7.62x39 good for HD as well as most larger game to ~250 yds. Better built then an AK, as hard to brake and cheap. Ammo is easy to find and cheap. Unless your short, a stock upgrade will help w/ ergonomics for less then $50. My wife calls mine a Giggle gun, because it's fun to shoot. Only con is they shoot minute of bad guy, 2-4 inch groups at 100yds 4-7" at 200yds. Won't thread a needle, but gets the job done.

A levergun might be a good option, a good levergun in 30WCF will "reach-out" just as far as an AK, but with much better accuracy.

Top Winchester is a CQB carbine and the bottom is a long range sniper rifle.

Maybe a 12ga with an 26 round XRAIL conversion or a FN FNAR....but you will need to scope the FN.

I just picked up a nearly-new CAI SAR-1 Romanian AKM with a Russian Kobra red dot sight, five 30-round magazines, a case, and a sweet trigger job for $560.

The thing simply eats the cheap Wolf 7.62 x 39 mm ammo, rarely needs cleaning, and is as reliable as a hammer.

If I ever need this for the zombies, I am comfortable it will always work easily and need a minimum of fuss or maintenance.

My criteria were:

- cheap
- reliable
- powerful enough to do the job
- readily available and inexpensive ammo

This one fit the bill.

I don't think we're helping you narrow down your options.

I second the Mini-14. For the money you want to spend, you will be pretty limited on the AR platforms. The Mini-14 is right in the zone. You could pick on up and throw on some AR-type accessories.

Of course a lever action is always a great choice.

I am not a rifle guy, I have a few, mostly 22's for plinking and small game. I personally like to shoot the Ruger Mini 14 and Mini 30, though I do not own one, yet. I prefer the 7.62 x 39 round, more bullet than 223. In my SKS at 100 yards I can consistantly hit clays on a stand, coke cans and keep 20 rounds on a smal target. The ammo doesn't break the bank, you can buy in bulk and lots of aftermarket accesories and stocks for the Mini 30 and SKS.

I like my Spikes Tactical 9mm AR rifle. It handles well and the savings in ammo in the first year should keep you grinning. 32 rounds of 9mm NATO should fill your HD needs pretty nicely. Spikes Tactical makes really great stuff and their rifles are truly top-notch. I have 3 of them (5.56, 9mm and .22LR) and they all work and look great!

I have a Rossie 1892 Winchester clone in .44 mag. I can use the same ammo in the pistol and it does not have the same connotation as the military style rifles. I must be old school because if it is not blue and walnut it just doesn't say firearm to me.

I'd prefer the more common rifle calibre's; 5.56, 5.45, 7.62 (39, 51 and 54). I'm looking for a magazine box fed rifle with a capacity from 20-30 rounds standard (depending on the calibre), something accurate, ergonomic, operates smoothly and whatnot. I'd prerfer a ghost ring type sight system (or revolving cylinder like the G3), possibly with the capability of mounting optics not in a relief fashion (more near the face).

I've been looking at putting together a CMMG upper and lower AR reciever (A3 upper, medium length system, 16 inch barrel) and calling it a day with an AR, but there must be other (possibly cheaper) alternatives. I've seen G3's, FALs, Galil, the Isreali Galil clone, Mini-14/30's, AK's, Steyr's and other foreign weapons that possible are very nice but I wouldn't know till I shoot them.

I'm looking to spend anywhere from $500-900

Help would be much appreciated, Thanks.
I have some very fine rifles made mostly in Romania and Poland near your price point. This is not Junk. Understand, the Springfield DX pistol is made in Croatia.

PM me or email me.
