I have a good friend who lives in LA, California, who I have finally convinced to get a gun for home defense.

He won't be able to carry, given that he lives in LA, so it will be soley for home defense.

He is older and married with no children in the house.

Because he has no real experience with guns, I thought that a revolver would be the best choice for him, and would appreciate some recommendations from those experiencd with revolvers.

Thanks.

Trying a Kahr K9 with Crimson Trace grips

I just came home with this 2009 Kahr K9. It has Crimson Trace grips and Mepro night sights. I picked it up as a potential CCW. Even though I'm happy with what I have now, the laser grips really interested me. As I get older and my eyes get worse, I'm thinking the laser may be a solution to the problem.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the laser dot appearing exactly where it should, right over the sight picture, without any adjustment needed. My range bag is packed and ready to go test this new compact for accuracy and POA Vs. POI. My other Kahrs have been quite accurate, so I expect this one will be also.

I already have a nice holster, a Mitch Rosen Premier, that I bought a while ago for a CW9. It also holds the K9 and my T9, making it a very useful holster. The CT grips make the pistol profile a little thicker than the standard Hogue rubber grips, but it is a negligable amount.

The night sights are Mepro Tru Dot, which are the same that I use now on my HK. These are excellent sights whether in daylight or low light.

I'll report back with shooting impressions after my range visit.

Armalite AR-24k - Modify or sell?

I've been carrying my current firearm (Armalite AR-24k, which is a CZ 75 clone) and though I love it to shoot, it's not very comfortable as a carry gun for IWB, and not very concealable OWB. I've been considering bobbing the hammer and cutting down the beavertail to make it more comfortable (it tends to dig into my side while carrying IWB). At the same time, I wonder if it might be better to leave it alone, sell it (which I've been trying to do for a while without much luck) and get something a bit more comfortable.

I bought a Taurus PT709 this week and put 50 rounds of cheap FMJ through it today and I love it. I bought it for cc, so small, thin, light, simple, and close range accuracy were important. I consistently hit a paint can from 16 yards, so that meets my defensive accuracy needs. Double taps not a problem. I can slide it in a suit pant pocket with no holster (with the convenintly located thumb safety on) and you can't even tell it's there. I've got more practice ahead, but so far it is sweet and reasonably priced. I've been cc a S&W 442 38 spl revolver, so this was a departure for me. I also have a Ruger P95, so semi 9mm isn't foreign, it's just too big to carry. The thumb and trigger safeties on the PT709 make it a little more comfortable for me to cc a semi 9mm with one in the pipe.

Night sights and smartcarry

Not sure if this is the right subforum, but..

I was reading some threads about night sights glowing through a shirt, which got me thinking (bad idea, that thinking) about when I carry with night sights in a smartcarry. Not that they would glow through, but about the radiation in what should probably be a radiation free zone. Now I want a sweat-proof, and leaded backing.

Why they carry guns in alaska !

Oct. 26, 2009

This guy lives just outside of Soldotna , Alaska ...

Friends,

Have I got a story for you guys!

King season is over, and since I had a day off before silvers start, I

Thought I would go for a walk! This occurred at 11:16 am this morning

(Sunday), just 2/10 of a mile from my house, ON OUR ROAD while walking

My dogs (trying to get in shape for hunting season, ironically!) for the

Record, this is in a residential area-not back in the woods, no

Bow hunting, no stealth occurring...

I heard a twig snap, and looked back...full on charge-a huge brownie,

Ears back, head low and motoring full speed! Came with zero warning; no

Woof, no popping of the teeth, no standing up, nothing like what you

Think or see on TV! It charged from less than 20 yards and was on me in

About one-second! Totally surreal-I just started shooting in the general

Direction, and praise God that my second shot (or was it my third?)

Rolled him at 5 feet and he skidded to a stop 10 feet BEYOND where I was

Shooting from-I actually sidestepped him and fell over backwards on the

Last shot, and his momentum carried him to a stop past where I fired my

First shot!

It was a prehistoric old boar-no teeth, no fat-weighed between 900-1000

Lbs and took five men to DRAG it onto a tilt-bed trailer! Big bear-its

Paw measured out at about a 9 1/2 footer!

Never-ever-thought "it" would happen to me! Its always some other s[ch]muck, Right?

Well, no bull- I am still high on adrenaline, with my gut in a Knot.

Feels like I did 10000 crunches without stopping! Almost puked for

An hour after, had the burps and couldn't even stand up as the troopers

Conducted their investigation! Totally wiped me out-cant even put that

Feeling into words, by far the most emotion I have ever felt at once!

No doubt that God was with me, as I brought my Ruger .454 Casull (and

Some "hot" 350 grain solids) just for the heck of it, and managed to

Draw and snap shoot (pointed, never even aimed!) from the hip! Total

Luck shot!

All I can say is Praise God for my safety and for choosing to leave the

Wife and kids at home on this walk! Got a charter tomorrow, so gonna TRY

To get some sleep now!

What are your thoughts?

I'm currently torn between two options that I've been considering and I'd like your help to assist me in figuring out which makes the most sense.

I just last month applied for my CPL here in WA, and am just about to start carrying. The two guns that I looked at, and had interest in were the SIG P239 and S&W 442. Of the two, I'm leaning towards the SIG simply because at work I carry a SIG P220, so the similar mechanics plus SIG reliability helped it edge out the S&W 442 which was a very close runner up.

I intend on carrying the P239 in a crossbreed IWB holster, as well as getting a smartcarry holster for it, both of which have been highly recommended on these forums.

The S&W 442 I was thinking of carrying in either a smartcarry or Galco Ankle Glove holster, which was recommended to me by a Cpl. at work who daily carries one in this very setup.

Anyways, here are the chooses that I'm stuck between. I recently sold three of my guns that were simply range guns to get some money to get myself geared up. I have enough money for both options, so money isn't the deciding factor. Here goes:

Option #1: Buy a SIG P239 and CTC Lasergrips for it. The idea behind this option is, this to me will be my primary carry gun, and as such I'd like to get it fully kitted out with CTC lasergrips as my duty weapon has them and I see some tactical advantages in having them. They can also be quite nice for dry fire practice/etc.

Option #2: Buy a SIG P239 and S&W 442, and wait to add CTC Lasergrips to the P239 down the road. The idea behind this option is, to carry the P239 primarily, but have the small J-frame as another option when I want something a bit lighter, or to simply carry both and treat the J-frame as my BUG to the P239. Basically, the idea is just to have more options when it comes to what I carry, when, where, etc.

So what are your thoughts? How much value do you see in having the lasergrips? Is it something that is required for a carry gun, or just something that is nice to have but not needed. I should note that I'm also looking into a EDC flashlight, that I want to work into my daily carry routine - so for low-light work I'd have the night sights on the P239 plus a flashlight. Thanks!

To Bob or not to Bob hammer .38 off duty.

I have a Charter Arms .38 Off Duty that is a blued version with a hammer.
Wanted to know if anyone out there has bobbed the hammer down and if you had to do it over again, would you. Mine is still intact but I have considered cutting it down to a lower profile to keep from snagging on clothes when quick drawing.
I bought this Charter Arms Off duty about 15 years ago for my wife and she wants to be able to have a gun with an external safety as she feels that a revolver in her purse could accidentally get caught on something and go off.
I like the little gun and will make a great BUG,or if I want to just carry something in a pocket around town without being weighted down with a .40 PPS tucked in my waistband.

If you have a similar gun with hammer intact in a pocket holster does it cover the hammer enough to still be able to draw without snagging or getting caught while drawing from pocket.

If anyone would have some before and after pics of bobbing tail and give me some hints on the best way to do it I would greatly appreciate it as I really do not feel the need to invest in a $300+ for another BUG when this one will do the job.

Thanks in advance for any and all information

Magazine released while in pocket

I live in the South, where the temperature is comfortable, or at least not cold for much of the year. I prefer not to wear a coat, vest, etc. to cover an IWB holster and carry pistol.

I prefer pocket carry (left front pocket, as I am left handed). I wear black Dickies with pleated front, and have extra length pockets sewn in. These are very loose fitting (baggy), and conceal a small or mid-size pistol well. My holsters are hand made specifically for each gun by a friend who has a shoe repair business.

My problem is that I have carried a number of different pistols this way, and almost all of them periodically release the magazine in my pocket. This leaves me with a one-shot pistol!

The only one that has never done this is the Walther PPS, which has the magazine release as part of the trigger guard, instead of a button on the side of the frame.

The PPS is a nice, very flat pistol that conceals well, but has a more limited capacity, due to the size of the follower in the magazine. I have the .40 cal version, and with the flush mag, it only holds 5+1 rounds.

I do not bump up against things, or do anything to put pressure on the side button of these other pistols I own, but the mag still releases sometimes. I would rather carry other pistols than the PPS, but do not want a one shot gun if I am attacked.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, did you solve it, and how?

Kimber 1911 Ambi-Safety Removal for Crimson Trace

I found a great deal on a like new pair of Crimson Trace Officer Grips LG-404 for my Ultra Raptor. The web site says for Kimber 1911's with ambi-safety to "see a gunsmith"

How hard is it to remove the ambi on a Kimber?
I've been thinking about a Wilson Extended Thumb Safety.
Is this a drop in part or dose it take a lot of fitting?

Thanks

I am slowly coming over to the darkside and starting to realize what they are so popular and how unique they are. Now for a CCW piece, what size would you reccomend? How do I begin to narrow the field of choices?? Which size for CCW? Is is the Grip length or the Barrel Length that will be the most important factor for CCWing. Please help thanks.

3in or 4in barrels?? Can you reccomend some inexpesive carry options. The only drawback is they seem to be more expensive than most handguns.

1911 Decision

After I've bought for everyone else on the list, I'll begin searching for a 1911 for yours truly. I'll probably be looking at a $600~$650 budget so Wilson Combat, Dan Wesson, and etc. are out of the picture. I have eyeballed the SA MilSpec, RIA Tactical, and Taurus. I am mechanically inclined and would like to do my own upgrades on whichever one I end up with. I can do some polishing and drop in parts but do not have the equipment for cutting the frame.

*Concerns and wants:*
*I would like to add a beavertail to my new addition but, as stated, I'm not willing to try cutting on the frame. (I know the Taurus already has a beavertail.)
*I would like the sights to be interchangeable without a gunsmith cutting the slide.
*I know SA has great customer service and have heard RIA is good also. Word on the street is that Taurus has sub par service.
*I've read that the SA and RIA parts use milspec parts but is this the same for the Taurus? (Will it be hard to find parts for the Taurus?)

So the choices are:
1. SA MilSpec
2. RIA Tactical
3. Taurus PT1911

Based on my concerns and wants listed below, what are your thoughts?

Thanks for your input!
