This is especially true for defensive weapons that must work as expected when you need them the most. This forum will cover these important areas and encourage you to ask questions before taking on an unfamiliar task. |

Dirty magazines
No, not the ones from the newsstand.
I just got back from the gun show with two new magazines for my pistol. Popped them out of the ziplocks, and was surprised to find them covered with a sticky layer of goo. I'm assuming this is a protectant for the blued finish, but it isn't quite as gooey as grease or as gunky as cosmolene. Like my technical terms? Hey, I'm a biologist, OK?!? How should I clean it off? Or should I just buff it off as much as I can? Should I put a thin layer of oil on the magazine, or just wipe it down with a silicone cloth? Thanks for the help.

Just use an old cotton t-shirt rag and wipe them off very good. Then use your favorite solvent, Gunzilla, or rust prevent.

I thought you meant actual dirty mags. My M9 mags in iraq get dirty and rounds start falling out and the follower won't move unless I smack it.
Simple green works great.

I've taken to one of the new "dry" lubes, Eezox, for my magazines. It cleans very well, then drys, leaving a very slick, dry, easy to clean surface. With this product the mags are dry and attract and hold very little grime. Eezox is also a good rust inhibitor. I put no "wet' lube in any of my mags.
