Has anyone ever damaged their finish with a cleaner that was too strong?

Has anyone ever damaged their finish with a cleaner that was too strong? There are quite a few strong copper cleaners out there.

Over time for example Hoppes #9 can cause problems. It will damage copper plating. Some if not all nickle plated slides have a copper layer that Hoppes can eat away. That will make the nickle peel.

I have melted a pair of grip with spay gun cleaner. I have a melted in finger print on my Lama .22 grip because of that stuff.

I partially melted the plastic grips on my PPK with gun scrubber...when I went to dry it off with a paper towel it stuck to it. Pulling it off left an impression of the paper tower checkering on the grips.

Free stippling!!

I'm not worried about it. I don't care about what a gun looks like, just the function.

Hey that's good to know. I like Hoppes #9, but HATE that this lid on the bottle never completely seals, and if the bottle gets stored on it's side, it leaks like crazy. Maybe I don't like Hoppes all that much. Just got a can of Breakfree CLP, I'll try that for a while.

Electroless Nickel is not Copper plated first. It bonds directly onto the Steel.
Older Nickel plating (called decorative Nickel) is Copper plated first.
That is not used anymore on modern firearms.

A lot of refinishing companies still use a copper base for nickel plating

I put in a 642 into an ultrasonic cleaner and caused finish problems. Does that count? I still have to send it back to S&W to re-finish.
