So I am not exactly a n00b, but in some ways I think I am ignorant. You don't know what you don't know, right?

So I like to clean my guns every couple of hundred rounds. I shoot XDs, which like Glocks are reliable and not at all finicky. So I am not worried if one has has 100 rounds down the pipe since the last cleaning. However, I clean regularly and did so today for both my 9sc and my 40c. The 9 has become my EDC but the 40 has been with me longer.

So on to the lesson. I cleaned like normal...CLP, cleaning brush, toothbrush, q-tip for small areas, and a rag to wipe down and clean up. Today I went one step further and fired up the air compressor. I sprayed air through my slide and frame, and HOLY MOLEY. So much gunk and garbage came out of those guns (at the point that I normally would have put them up as clean) that I needed to change my clothes from everything that sprayed on them. I am not kidding! I had to go back and wipe them all down again, and they were FILTHY.

So...lesson learned. I don't think that I can take my XD apart further than I do, but I will ALWAYS make sure to take that extra step. They still fired flawlessly, but I am willing to bet that a few more years of not doing that and the mechanisms would have started gumming up.

I'm glad I learned something today!

Thanks for tip. Will try it out and see the results. What you wrote doesn't really surprise me. I just never thought to do that.

I have done that for years, another trick if you don't have a compressor is to take water as hot as you can get it and still handle it and add a little dish soap. Soak your disassembled gun in it for a few minutes then pull one piece at a time and wipe clean. This works better in conjunction with a compressor to blow the parts clean and dry.

The hot water evaporates quickly when you pull the parts from the hot water and the gunk just melts away.

You do not have to worry about rusting if you get it dried right away, that only happens during slow oxidation.

I have an air compressor but never thought about it,I guess in the future I will spray it with some degreaser etc then blow til dry,then lightly lube as needed

My Glocks are lucky to see a cleaning every 2-3,000 probably more rounds: come on they're GLOCKs!!!!!! But then they get a bath in an ultrsonic tub and then dried and wiped with an oily cloth, a couple dabs of Pro Shot Gold Grease in the slide rails, a shot of Hornady Single Shot in the trigger and back together they go.

Now the 1911s, they get TLC, 'cause they're 1911s.
