The only problem with an email reminder is that there is no facility within the vBulletin software to do that. It would require going through the contribution log manually and sending an email to each contributing member individually each year. For those that send checks, I keep no individual record except for the flag that says they contributed in their member record. When there is no PayPal indicator, I know the contribution was by check....

i don't think the e-mail reminder is that necessary. a bold sticky was enough for me and i was sort of new at the time and was still learning to navigate around here.

Ok, I just made another discretionary donation, mainly as I wanted to do something about every 3 months and also as I appreciate some of the changes recently.

But, I got an email from PayPal/Bumper saying:

Quote:
You have successfully signed up for a subscription to Donation Using PayPal
Subscription using PayPal.

--------------

Your subscription will automatically renew at the rates stated above unless you
cancel prior to the end of the billing period.
Again, I don't mind having a subscription donation that automatically renews but I thought that it was set up to not do that?
Just a heads up in case something is broken.

I too would welcome a reminder when it's time to re-support. Just a generic "It's been a year since the original donation" or "The Kitty is getting low" to everyone, as a post would do.

My forum donation date is in January.

My birthday is in January.

That's how I remember it.

So many people requested a recurring donation that I implemented one, but against my better judgement. To me, personally, I don't like recurring donations as I always felt they were used to "hook" someone into making a payment that they would then forget about and their credit card would continue to be charged. It is an option available to those that prefer it even though I wouldn't use it myself.

It does look like I need to see if I can change that goofy email message. I have looked and never found a "trigger" to automatically notify members a year after their donation and it's way too much to do manually. Not to mention it would make me feel like one of those guys standing at an intersection with a cardboard sign....

By the way, if any of you make a donation and your status is not changed on the day you made the donation, please shoot me an email through the "Contact Us" link so I can check into it. I just found someone that had made a donation a couple of weeks ago and had not been tagged as a supporter.

Bumper, how about putting a reminder in your annual Merry Christmas and Happy New Year message? Seriously, a seasonal header with a reminder might work. Say let the seasonal header run from 12/1/07 to 01/15/08. Since most members seem to be in favor of a reminder and the header shows up on every page it is low key yet visible.

I acknowledge Bumper's wish to not ask for money but respectfully disagree that it is 'panhandling' to do so.
The site needs money, that is a given. Without money it will suffer. We are all capable of diverting the cost of a box of ammo once in a while, a gentle reminder that there are costs incurred is not a brazen demand for a handout.

We don't need a 'pay to post' system - you're safe Chris. Or a tax per word - you too are safe Lima... we just need a little reminder somewhere that the site runs on love and money, so give both when you have spare...

But that's just 0.02's double penny as usual...

That would be doable and a solution I had never thought of. As long as I don't start looking like a panhandler, I could do that annually....
