Waaayyy back in the good ole days I used to think of a grain as some of those flakes/kernels of powder I had seen in shotgun shells.
Later I learned that a grain is a unit of weight same as ounce, pound, kilogram or ton.

And if that is not confusing enough how about carat?? (not the Bugs Bunny kind).
