You get one star every time you give a straight answer to a question, you'll see nobody has more than six.

Since nobody has given you a definitive answer to your question, I will.

When you have made a certain number of posts, you earn stars. They really don't mean anything but are a quick way to to tell how active a member has been. You could also compare the post count with the amount of time a persona has been a member here, but it is more of a graphic representation. The breakdown of when you "earn" a star is:

5-49 posts = 1 star
50-249 posts = 2 stars
250-499 posts = 3 stars
500-999 posts = 4 stars
1,000 up = 5 stars

All staff have 6 stars regardless of the number of posts they have.

With so many long time members, that system should probably be reworked, but, honestly, it is just an indicator that some look at and other don't....

This just means that there are alot of us that are still unfamiliar with where things are in the site!
