When has Hollywood gotten it right?
There was a post on the opening scene of Patriot Games that got me thinking... When has Hollywood gotten it right in the depiction of an armed conflict, not including war/military movies?
I can think of a couple instances where they seem to have done well. 1. The Shootist: At the start when J.B. Books is held up he tosses his billfold to the criminal while holding a derringer in his hand. After gut shooting the criminal he goes on to state his belief that he would not have been left to simply go on his way had he handed over his money. Pretty well done in my opinion. 2. Clear and Present Danger: The ambush of the motorcade in Columbia. Wow, what a scene. If anything it showed you that perhaps shooting back may not be the best solution. When ambushed and outgunned KEEP MOVING. Any place is better than where everyone is shooting at you. How about some others? |

Most of the shooting scenes in Collateral seemed pretty sound.

The show 24 seems to do a pretty good job IMHO. Old Jack doesn't seem to hold back when it comes to extracting information from the enemy for example. Can't remember specific dialog at the moment.

I always thought the original Miami vice Tv show wasn't to bad. For it
being what it was.

Practically anything done by Michael Mann (Collateral, Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter, Miami Vice, etc.) when it comes to fighting seems grounded in realism....no doubt due to his attention to detail, experience in weapons (I think he attended Gunsite and/or some other top flight self-defense school), and, likely, technical advisors.

The sad thing is Hollywood rarely gets it right. There are a lot of examples of them getting it wrong, but few by comparison, of them getting it right.
I'm biased though, I really get nitpicky when it comes to weapons & movies. The best IMHO: big screen- Saving Private Ryan small screen- Band of Brothers

I always give my top vote on this to ''Heat'' - some very well played out stuff there - pretty good attention to detail.
