I'm saving for a Taurus PT1911. It comes with a ton of usually aftermarket extras and is rapidly gaining a very good reputation. It can be had for about $450.00. It will be the 6th 1911 in my stable, all different makers.

$450 is not bad for a plain jane military 1911.
That's a good price if you can alk in... But with ~$20 shipping and ~$25 FFL transfer it comes close to the Taurus and for the money, I'd buy the Taurus.

I am a Springfield fan & I bought a TAURUS PT1911 a while back. It is a great pistol. In fact, I plan on buying t he SS model when they come out also.

My .02. Dan Wesson. Quality innards, good fit, all around decent weapon. Priced right.

My other 1911's include a SS Springfield loaded with an Actions by T action job, Kimber Eclipse Pro II, Springfield Champion, and an Auto Ordnance (Kahr).

I liked the first PT1911 enough that I bought a second.

Great value!!!

You should take a close look at Charles Daly. They make a blued steel, full size 1911 with all the bells and whistles that retails for $499.00.

I looked at one at the Kalispell gun show yesterday. The seller was asking $450.00 for it. I almost bought it. Probably should have.

No need to look at the Daly's.

You only have to read reviews from people that have them.

In researching the PT1911, I didn't find anyone who had encountered a problem. I found instances where over 1000 rounds of mixed types of ammo were fired without cleaning with no malfunctions.

Taurus has built a 1911 that deserves a look by anyone looking to buy a QUALITY 1911, not a cheap 1911.

I recently bought a RIA from a co-worker in unfired condition. After 200 rounds of flawless shooting, I was left with a smile on my face and a small scar on my right hand where the pistol declared its need for a beavertail..

If you can find a local RIA for $300 or so, I would go that way. At least, until you can make up your mind that you want to play with 1911's.

From what I understand, 1911's are much like Glocks and .22's.. It it hard to stop at ONE.

The Charles Daly's polymer 1911 are made IMI in Isreal, I fired one and quite like it. they hav come out with a commander model, but so far only in 9mm. I have to admit seeing the Dan Wesson-CZ stainless commander in a gun mag made me drool, nice looking gun and they seem to have a good rep.
