In GA you can go through the academy on your own at your cost, but you are not actually a certified officer until hired by a department. Plus, if you don't go to work as an officer within three years your academy credit doesn't count anymore.
Have you considered reserve work? |

In my state, reserve applicants go through a reserve POST program and are on equal footing with paid LEO's. If all you're in it for is the training and hope to CCW where ordinary mortals can't, there are better methods for the former and nothing to help with the latter.
My understanding from POST is our state pays for the training for reserve candidates as we are so rural and always short-handed and under-funded. |
