Percussion or Flintlock?

I sure did a pretty long time ago.
It was a Thompson Center Arms black powder rifle in 50 Caliber.
Mine is a flint and not percussion.

If you have not ever built one...you should.

My Wife bought me one as a Christmas gift.
It's a great Winter project and you can really have something super nice when you're finished if you take your good sweet old time and build it carefully.

It one of those great satisfying Pioneer Project type type things to do.
It was very rewarding to build it.

You really only need some basic hand tools...a few inexpensive odder hand tools.
Sandpaper...a wood rasp...those sorts of truly basic things.

Buy a kit & build one!
They are not real expensive.

Not a flinter QK but - way way back built up this fella ........ a 44 percussion. Sorry about the crappy pic.

I even forget now where I got it but it was cheap and actually not too much hassle to complete. IIRC I had to do fitting with the woodwork and finishing of course . then I think assemble the lock parts etc. It was quite easy, lotta fun and the gun shot quite well.

My father in law builds at least one a year... it a lot more work than I thought. He starts with a block of wood, well more like a log and carves it by hand to a stock. He buys pieces parts of a local shop near his home builds it bit by bit. They are pretty neat when done.
I would like to do a revolver kit, but I need another project as much as I need a hole in my head.

I did a 36 caliber CVA revolver kit several years ago. Been thinking about a long gun, maybe a shotgun kit. Lately the only thing I've built is a potato gun.

My kit started with a roughed out stock that already had the basic inletting of the lock done and most of the other hardware was already pretty closely fit.

I just needed to shape & finish the stock but, I put way extra effort into my metal parts since I was working in a metal refinishing and plating shop at the time.

Instead of blueing or browning my barrel after I draw filed & polished it...I was able to copper plate it and oxidize the copper to a nice dark, rich brown.

I've always wanted to build a Kentucky rifle, always something I thought would be sweet hanging up in my den.

I actually sort of made mine look too good.
I might redo it and darken the stock & do a rubbed oil finish.

This was some deja vu. I was looking at kits yesterday. I want to build a Kentucky Long Rifle (flintlock I think) before this fall's muzzleloading season. Anyone have ideas on where to start? I did some google searches yesterday on different sites, but really haven't started my research yet. Any links pointing me in the right direction would be awesome!
