Turn it in...for all you know it was used in a crime.

I agree with everyone else here that you need to turn this in to the police. In particular, the 'half-mag' thing makes me really suspicious. I could see some hapless CCWer accidentally leaving their weapon in the theater (after all, not to long ago I had a very anxious day when I thought I'd done something like that myself). However, I'd expect someone's carry gun to be fully loaded. A half empty mag really makes me wonder where the other half-magazine worth of bullets might be.

I hope this makes you feel better. I found a brand new browning shot gun in a feild next to my work site. I figured it was stolen or used in a crime so I turned it in. Its better to turn it in then try to explain how it got into your possession if it's found to be stolen. I'm sure the rightful owner will be glad to get it back.

Simple answer: it's someone's gun ... and your nephew knows it's not his. So, turn it in to the police or sheriff dept.

Pointed answer: if it turns out this gun has been responsible for crimes, if/when that gets found out some years hence, you won't have a leg to stand on. So, turn it in to the police or sheriff dept.

I agree with all above .....

I would also urge you to NOT handle it anymore than you have already done. If it is still load or if the mag is still loadd leave it all as is. There may be prints on the rounds that could really help the LEO find a bad guy.

I would suggest placing it in a clean zip lock baf or even a brown paper page and then give the local LEo a call. They will come right over and pick it up. They will also of course want to know exactly when and where it was found because it this turns out to be a crime gun then they might even look through security tapes from the theater, etc.

Just call the police and thanks for being a good citizen.

Post Look On The Bright Side

When you turn it in and if it's a firearm that the police are looking for - and they ballistics test it and can tie it to a crime, shooting, or murder and now are able to get a conviction...then you've helped take one bad guy off the streets.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If it was used in a crime now the evidence that may link the perp to the crime may be compromised by your nephews and your prints. Don't handle it anymore and GET IT TO THE POLICE!

I also agree with the question about where the other half of the mag's bullets are located?
