One other trick that just popped into mind. If you are looking at a 9mm, .38 or larger, and the owner will let you dry fire, you can test the mainspring and hammer for proper energy.
1) Break out your trusty #2 pencil with an eraser still intact. 2) Ensure that the gun is completely unloaded. 3) If a revolver, cock the hammer. If semi-auto, know if it is DA or SA. If SA rack slide or cock hammer. 4) Point weapon up to the ceiling. 5) Insert #2 eraser end down. 6) Pull trigger. 7) Catch pencil as it falls back down. If the pencil doesn't leave the barrel, it is possible that the mainspring is tired and needs replaced, or the hammer (if modified) is too light and is likely to give a light strike on a primer, thus failing to detonate the charge.
