Another UPDATE

Well, the cops took the kid in and then released him. The reason? It seems that she was not shot with a .22 but with an air rifle. The projectile appears to be a pellet from a multiple pump air rifle. It struck her between two ribs and is now lodged very close to her liver. They have decided not to operate for now as it is too close to the liver and the surgeon is worried about damaging her liver in the operation.

They feel she will be OK with the pellet where it is and in fact told us yesterday that her body may try to remove the pellet itself. The Doc says that often the body will work an object like this towards the surface by itself and it is much safer to let the body do it that to do an invasive procedure and risk damaging an organ like the live.

She is home now, resting but still in some pain. We have been to see her and she is doing as well as can be expected.

The family of the kid who shot here has not offered to pay any medical bills, not offered to help with anything nor have they even said they were sorry. To top it off, the regional supervisor that my wife and her boss fall under is being a jerk and expecting Ann (the girls mother and my wife's boss) to attend an all day training class Saturday knowing her daughter is at home with a projectile wound. This guy is a class A jerk and I am surprised no one has ever beat the hell out of him.

But, she is doing pretty well, and it looks like she will make a good recovery. Thank you for all the prayers I know they helped and if you want to throw a few more out there, that would be great too.

More updates as I get them.

Thx for the info Mike. I well recall a .20 cal Sheridan Blue Streak which if pumped to max was devastating re potential velocity so - even if not a .22 LR .. we still have a weapon with potential for considerable damage.

I agree, but right now they are concentrating on their daughter.

Sounds like they could be following the advice of a lawyer already.

Think of it like when you are in a car accident. First thing the insurance company tells you is to not apologize. That however, if true in this case, does not make such inaction any more right. They will have to own up to the consequences of their actions eventually, only will be worse later. Shooting a little girl is not something that solves itself and just goes away.

yeah higher ups tend to not care when personal life issues conflict with company policy. Hope everything works out right on the job front, but whatever that leads to it is reason to rejoice knowing that the girl will be ok. Lawyer time can come later, right now there are much bigger issues at hand.

I'll second the dangers of a air rifle...most people just don't realize it for some strange reason. I had a friend growing up just outside of baltimore. He lived in a somewhat wooded area so occassionally his parents would allow him to target shoot out back. A new kid moved into the block that week and discovered us shooting out back while nosing around. He decided it was time for him to do some shooting and at that time we(my friends) decided it was best to put the gun away and if in time we trusted him and his parents ok'd it we'd start letting him shoot with us. That wasn't good enough. He dove at us and wrestled the rifle from my friend, eventually turning it on him (Sheridan .22 already pumped) and fired.

My friend was in the hospital for quite a long time. The .22 pellet had gone in at his lower abdomen area and richocheted around inside his torso penetrating various organs along the way including his stomach, upper intestines, and eventually lodged in his spine.
