BTW I forgot to mention earlier, note the suicide population position of France.
They are at positions 9, 3, 2, 4, 6, 4, and 3 and aside from the 'age 15-24' grouping they are otherwise across the board much morelikely to kill themselves than the global average (!).
Citizen ownership of firearms is restricted in France.

From this two things can be inferred;
1) Guns have little to do with suicides in France, muchless elsewhere
2) Even French people don't like the French as based on suicide results. :\

Since a gun is a great equalizer, I would think the murder rate would go up if guns could somehow be eliminated. There are plenty of smaller, weaker, older, handicapped, etc., people that would be at the mercy of a stronger attacker, even if he was only armed with a rock. Besides, just like drugs and alchohol (remember the prohibition era?), I don't believe guns can ever be totally eliminated... and they'll always be in the wrong hands.

Would the suicide rate go up?

Actually, the article states very clearly that many nations have higher suicide rates than the U.S. They just kill themselves by different means. In England, where the suicide rate among youths increased 10 times more sharply than in the U.S., they did so by car exhaust. (p. 692)

Gee, why doesn't the government just outlaw murder and crime???

duh, people do what they want. A law banning firearms would just mean that the badguys are the only ones with guns. Thank goodness for the 2nd amendment. Our founding fathers were pretty remarkable folks. Could you imagine trying to write the 2nd amendment into law in today's political culture???

Intersting, makes the Anti argument a bit thin.

Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder And Suicide?
Contrary to what the antis want you to believe, Gun control had no effect on the suicide rate in Canada. http://www.fraserinstitute.ca/admin/...05ffmauser.pdf
