For farm/ranch use give some serious consideration to a S&W ( used if you can find for the price ) or Taurus 4 or 6" .357 . 4" if your going to ccw , and stay to the k frame size for ccw . With .357 loads you can handle coyotes ballisticly further out than you are likely to hit them , and you can stick .38 special target loads ( wadcutters ect ) in it and pot rabbits and other meat of opportunity ( only in season of course LOL ) without wastage . Really tho if your going to ranch or do ranch work you should consider ( when finances allow ) a " farm gun " and a " town gun " since the farm gun is going to be more geared towards hunting , and the town gun more towards concealable defense .

I paid less than $400.00 for this:
![]() DISCLAIMER: The ambidextrous safety is NOT standard. I added it later. Also, this is the 10mm version. My pistol was originally a .45ACP. I bought a conversion kit and switched it later. You can buy this in any of the following calibers: 9mm, .38 Super, .40S&W, 10mm autopistol, and .45ACP. If you can't find one locally, I'd suggest Reeds Ammunition and Research

Well... Let me ask you all this. If I am looking to take out something like a coyote, and my choices were "limited" to 40 S&W or .45 ACP would there be a real difference between the two?
I understand the caliber wars issue in respects to how the rounds effect human targets, but not so much so with other animals.

But let me ask you this, why do you want to kill Cyotes so bad? They are wonderful animals.

Well, you are putting words in my mouth; I don't want to shoot anything. I want to be prepared for anything; coyotes tend to mind their own, so odds are I'll never need to put one down. I simply mention coyotes because I don't know of any larger animal I need to worry about; everything else (like badgers, for example) are smaller, and simplier to kill.
I just don't want to be shooting with a sub-par caliber.

I post another vote for the Rock Island 1911. Mine has been flawless and as cheap as they are they're hard to beat.
I would suggest a Springfield GI, but it's over the $400 mark unless you find a use one. Most any used Ruger revolver can be had under $400, as can a lot of used Ruger autos come to think of it.
