The main advantage of the '06 is the fact that bullet weights go from 110 grains up to 220.
You can a have a barn burning varmint load or a heav bullet that will whack any game animal alive. For long range, (600 yards +) the .30 caliber 220 grain Sierra Match has one of the best ballistic coefficents out there. The BC of the .270 isnt even in the same league. With that being said, I've taken deer with both although most of my rifle kills have been with the .06. The deer couldnt tell the difference though and there was virtually no difference in the way they died. Although I am somewhat partial to the time honored .30-06, I wouldnt hesistate to take either caliber hunting with me.

I like the .30-06 better than any other rifle cartridge. It's a little more flexible on the heavy bullet side of things. I handload for both and both are excellent, better in my view than any magnum rifle cartridge under .30.
The .308 is forever "almost as good" as the .30-06 in my view. Truth be told, if I was told I could only have one of the above three cartridges to use from now on I'd be fine if I could handload for it. |
