Railroad Tie Plates work well. They're reasonably thick, non-hardened (don't shatter), and already have holes in them for hanging. FYI, we used to use cast iron skillets for long-distance blackpowder rifle shooting because they "ring" so nicely with a hit. Sad part is, that shatter when hit with a .357 Sig. My Buckskin Buddies made me buy 'em another skillet!

Actually a relatively inexpensive stick welder will do fine, tho you won't get quite such a ''pretty'' weld. Most of the welds on my device were IIRC only 10G rods and about 120A.

I need to reinforce mine and was given a snow plow blade - which should when I get it cut up make for some very tough plates. Indeed, rebar is just fine for this sorta deal if you have some - 3/4" probably about ideal.
