I agree with Sixto... one more thing that can break.
Other than the added potential for failure though, I don't mind thumb safeties. As others pointed out, it may enable more LEO's to carry an XD in the future... although I would think any LE Agencies that allow Glocks would allow XD's.

Hmmm. Did my pre-safety XD just increase a little bit in value? Heh. A most unlikely collectors' item?

![]() FWIW, the lack of a thumb safety has nothing to do with why the XD is not a popular option among LE, take a look at all the top players in the LE market... no thumb safeties for all but one, maybe two models. I could tell ya'll something, but most will just argue with me, so I wont. ![]()

As far as the XD is concerned, I think that adding a thumb safety is an solution for a non-existent problem.
It could be a hold over from the Military looking for a new gun. ![]()

That is something - after all, it's only on one of the .45 ACP models.

Looks like only the service size .45. I'd say .mil trials led to this. After they designed and tooled up for this the .mil decided to end the test. Springfirld just went with it. Nothing wrong with trying to get a bigger piece of the marked. There are a lot of older guys that don't like the plastic guns because of "no safety". This may help. That said, I won't be buying one.

Anyone with a gun with a manual safety and ignores it, ignores it at their own peril. At a recent action shoot (IDPA like) I was at, I was acting as safety officer. A very experienced shooter with a Beretta w/ manual safety started a course of fire with no bangy, no clicky. The extra 2 or more seconds for him to realize the gun that he ignores the safety actually had the safety engaged. NOTE: he explained to me he always keeps the safety off so he can ignore de-activating the safety. Last edited by sojourner; January 30th, 2008 at 01:50 PM. Reason: edited for clarity |

That being said, I like the fact that it is an option. Want a thumb safety, you can have it. Don't want the thumb safety, no problemo! Remember guys, the M&P basically has the same option, and I know one agency was waiting for S&W to add a thumb safety before they bought theirs.

SIXTO is right about the lack of a thumb safety not being the reason that so many Depts. Do not approve the XD.
I seem to recall seeing a report that disallowed the XD because it was a “single action” rather than a “double action” like the Glock. Glock, a double action???? Yup, the Glock Safe Action is a “partly tensioned firing pin lock”. This means that the striker is partially cocked but that when the trigger is pulled the striker is moved further back to “full cock” before releasing and firing. This makes it a double action because it must move the striker back to full cock BEFORE releasing it. The XD on the other hand has the “Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) Trigger System” which fully cocks the striker making it “single action”. Does this make a difference??? To the administrator that is writing the policies and not listening to anybody that has any gun knowledge….you bet it does. He/she sees that “single action” designation and says "nope, not as safe as a double action, not available to be on the allowable list”. End of story…. |
