The small size of the safety also looks to me to be very un handy. I know it is hard to tell from the picture but it just looks awkward to me. Reminds me more of a decocking lever than an actual safety. I don't see the need, but I am looking forward to taking a look at one.

I'd probably agree with JD...other than expanding markets, there really is no reason for the thumb safety. People have been buying the gun since before it was called the xd, and for over 7 years now, and that is without the thumb safety. While I sometimes find myself thumbing the non-existent safety off on my xd after practicing with my 1911, I'm still not sure I'd like a thumb safety on it. Suppose it wouldn't hinder it either, but...meh.

I like the idea of a thumb safety for another reason. Some of you may scoff at this (scoffers!) and that's okay.

On certain holsters, especially carrying IWB, it can be very easy to have the slide pull back a little when reholstering if I don't put my thumb on it. A manual thumb safety would solve this problem by holding the slide firmly in place.

I won't scoff but I will question why anyone would not put their thumb on the back of the slide and/or hammer of any gun they intended to re-holster? It's something I do everytime I put my gun back into it's holster whether it be IWB or OWB. That to me is just a good heads-up play.

As far as a thumb safety on the XD? It was said earlier and I agree. Probably put there to help sell more pistols to agencies requiring it than for any other reason. Looking at the pic on the SA website, the damn safety lever is on the wrong side anyways!! I want to drop that puppy with my thumb and NOT my trigger finger!

I didn't see on teh pics that it was ambi so if I missed it, than forget what I said. If it's only on the right hand side of the slide, than BOOOOOO on SA for doing something silly like that!

i wouldn't want one. is this going to be coming on all models? or is it simply an option on certain service models?

edit: i just looked at their online catalog, and answered my own questions. it appears to be an option on the 4" service models.

It's just not needed, just added to silence a few critics. But, I love the gun, so when I buy another, the safety will just be left off. I've been carrying theXD, along with my Glocs, for a while now, so I never give a safety a passing thought.

+1 I know that I'm in the minority on this.
