I have large hands but I installed a set of Navidrex thin micarta grips from Brownells on my BHP. The transformation was amazing. My 13 y.o. son put a 150 rounds through it today with a big smile. If you have small hands and want a hi-cap pistol, the BHP is the way to go.

My wife has small hands and she loves her Taurus Mil Pro PT111 9MM. Its a little too small for me, and I end up rubbing the tip of my trigger finger on my support hand by the base of the thumb. That lil bad boy packs a punch though.

Dean,
I have small hands as well. IMO, there are two dimensions to consider. One is girth of the grip. The other is trigger reach (this applies if you have short fingers. From your list: J-frames--Works well. Other S&Ws--Depends on the grips. I loathe target grips due to their large size. With good grips, anything up to an N-frame is pretty natural. I have not tried the X-frame. Most 1911 makes--I echo what the guys above said. Kahr guns--Trigger reach was a shade long, but doable. High Power--Works well, but I've never tried the DA version. Not on your list: SIG 226--No problems. Springfield XD40--No problems. Beretta M-9--A shade thick in the grip, but my real issue is trigger reach. I can make it work well, but it's not natural.

226 is too big for me for sure.
I'm not really looking for a gun for me, but just posting this in every forum to make it easy to find when soemoen else comes along. I've owned a CZ P-01, SIG 229, HK P2000SK, Beretta PX4, S&W 642, and fired a P226 and G17. But yeah- I should have listed all XD's.

Dean,
You're a step ahead of me. I've got small hands and find the XD9sc to be perfect! I can't wait for the Storm 9c.

+1 on the 1911! BHP is and always will be an awesome gun. My third choice would be either a J-frame revolver or the Bersa .380.

Dean,
My Wife and I have the same (small) sized hands. Mas Ayoob, back ~20 years ago, addressed this issue specifically at one of the first AWARE seminars that was given. He was focused on women, but it struck a chord with me. I let my first 1911 languish in my safe for ~23 years before selling it. Then my first defensive handgun course with Jim Crews taught me about "short triggers" (a $14 drop-in solution for small hands). I was elated to learn this but pissed because I had sold that 1911 a few years earlier. Today my favorite gun is the S&W 1911 with a short trigger!! S&W J-frames work well, with proper grips . . . and there are tons of different sizes/styles to choose from. My Wife chose a Glock 17 and S&W 64 (K-frame) and shoots both without problems (she only shoots the revolver SA, mainly due to carpal tunnel issues). I can handle the H&K USP .45c just fine, but the Glock 21 is too wide in my hand . . . once the G21SF gets approved here (dumb testing requirements) I plan on getting one as I like .45 as a CCW caliber. The H&K P7 is unique, thin grips and I can shoot it just fine for a few mags before the trigger guard turns cherry red and too hot to handle. ![]() I tried the SigPro 2340 and found it too big for my hands. Yes, I find hitting the mag release single-handed to be a problem on many guns, but I don't let that get into my decision-tree if the gun fits/shoots otherwise. I just work around this issue if need-be. |

An arched mainspring housing is a good addition for the short trigger on the M1911 for small hands.

The M&P pistols are nice for smaller hands. My wife likes the feel of the small backstrap grip.
