Yeah, I just couldn't resist.

Yup, sometimes I just offer too good a target to pass up.

Same with the one I have: Chrome, $300, and shoots everthing. I have never carried it concealed but have had a lot of fun shooting it.

Many years ago my parents gave me a nickle plated 59 as a Christmas gift. I carried that 59 quite a few nights on secuity duty. I qualified very well with it. They are or at least mine is very accurate. I still have it in my collection.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm probably going to take advantage of my Monday off and take it to the range.

A buddy of mine had one that would fire 2-3 rounds with each trigger pull (worn-out sear?)...he didn't hang on to it for long after it started doing that.

I had a S&W 459 which was the second generation of the model 59. To my knowledge there wasn't much difference except it had protected rear sights, which were also adjustable.

It was the first handgun I had purchased. I bought it new for somewhere in the neighborhood of $320 around 1981 or so. It was much more afordable than the Browning P-35 Hi-Power that I really wanted.

It was however a decent gun with fair accuracy as I recall. It was also a bit clunky for my taste. Definitely not as sleek and streamlined as the Hi-Powers.

I would have scooped that gun in a heartbeat. I've owned several 59s and other variations of the same gun, not because of bad guns, but due to trading up and down for other guns. (469, 669, 6906 459, 659 etc) they all seem to work VERY well. I had oneof the first 59s made, way back in the early 70s and found it to be etremly reliable. remember, it's all about what you feed it, and how it was taken care of. Check your mag follwers to see if they may need to be replaced (just a suggestion) and also check to see how smooth the feed ramp is (possible feed ramp polish if needed) Other than that you got ONE HECK of a DEAL! Give us a ramge report whenn you shoot it!

The 459 and other 2nd generation S&W autos had a firing pin block. With 1st gen autos the firing pin was free floating and if the gun was dropped from sufficient height and landed just right on the muzzle the firing pin could move forward with enough force to fire. 2nd gen S&Ws had a block on the firing pin which prevented the firing pin from moving unless the trigger was held back.

I have a 5946. That is one accurate pistol. I carried it for a while on duty. I had the feed ramp polished and the chamber entry throated to make it feed better. I also had the trigger smoothed out. I love that gun! I don't carry it any more but I do use it for training NRA pistol classes. Smith & Wesson autos are a lot like most 1911s in that they're generally okay out of the box but they ALL can stand to be touched up by a decent gunsmith. Once the gunsmith is done, then you'll have a gun that you'll love for many years.
