I got hit just the other day by a 9mm ricochet and the steels were some 20 yards away IRRC. It came back hard enough to draw break skin and draw a bit of blood (Chooie made some awful joke about me getting a nipple pierced the hard way
). Shooting at an IDPA match once, one of my bullets hit a steel target and bounced back almost 30 yards landing (softly) on the shoe of the SO. I got this from Safe Direction, LLC Quote:

If you hang the plate such that the incident angle is 15 degrees or more, does this not minimize the chance of both penetration of the steel and lead bounce back?

If the surface stays flat, angling the plate can help.
But if the surface gets all pitted and dented, who knows what angle the exact spot of impact will present to the bullet? Matt

Well, I got 2 peices 12 inch x 12 inch and boy these things are heavy! the thought of the 1/8 inch was to have it pivot from top to bottom so when you hit it would fall over, then right itself again. I may try two, one with the 1/2 inch, and one with the 1/8 inch and see what happens.
i will try to get some pix and post them when I get em done.

Today's top story,
A quiet country afternoon was interupted by gunfire today. Witnesses had stated that they saw a man with a pistol in his hand shaking his head in disbelief. The victim was a steel plate 17 inch x 17 inch x 1/8 inch thick. The unknown shooter had left the plate full of dents that are beyond repair. Welders pronounced the steel plate useless today at the scene. Funeral arrangements for the steel plate will be held at the local scrap yard on Monday. Proceeds from the funeral will go toward thicker plates.

Wow ridurall, that is a convenient gun range! I can honestly say that I have never seen a gun range with a child's playscape down range before. Do you use the sandbox to clear guns? You get to keep all the GS residue, lead, and such right there where your kids play. Having the pig target inside the confines of the yard is even better. I am sure you use that for .22 lr shooting. Every impact on that pig puts lead into your yard and no doubt some backsplatters to the playscape. Luckily, the impact of lead on the developing brain of a child is generally minimal, even if lifelong.
Nice looking little boy. What in incredibly irresponsible thing to do.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, you've already saved me the trouble of telling you that you're 1/8" plate won't work. Mild steel can stand up to thousands of handgun hits with lead bullets if the steel is at least 3/8" thick. Since you're OP didn't mention caliber or type of bullet, the only other thing I'll say is that you absolutely should not shoot a metal target with a jacketed bullet at less than 25 yards. It isn't so much the lead that will hurt you as it is shrapnel from the jacket. The distance can be reduced if you angle the target so that hits are deflected to the ground. Placing a layer of sand directly beneath the target will contain particles and keep them from bouncing off hard dirt. Do NOT reduce the distance if the targets surface has impact dents or imperfections. Hits on an imperfect surface remove all bets as to where the shrapnel will go. While you should wear them anytime while target shooting, NEVER shoot at steel targets without wearing a good pair of safety glasses. Hoss

I found out too that the pendulum thing did not work either. I thought if I balanced the weight so the bottom was slightly heavier than the top every time it was struck it would tip over then right itself. Did not work that way.

I know that as a welder, you're probably against paying for something that you can build yourself, but you might take a look at purchasing one of these. Besides giving a reaction when hit, these are made of armor plate and will take enormous abuse. We've hit ours hundreds of times at 200 yards with FMJ 223 to 6mm and hardly a mark on it. If nothing else, you could buy one and then use the design to build more yourself.
