I too am pondering this. I have no long guns just a couple of Glocks at the moment. I am really torn between the AR and the AK style rifles. Any thoughts? The one I would like to add this year to the collection for sure is for sentimental reasons. It is the civilian version of the M1-A. My father used the military version during his stint in the army. I chose the semi-auto version because I don't have a class III permit. How is the quality of Springfield Armory's version of this rifle? Thanks for the help.

My understanding is that Springfield Armory uses some MIM parts. The best M1As come from Fulton Armory or LRB - there may be others - and are made from all USGI parts. They cost a little more, but Springfield Armory isn't asking for chump change to begin with. JMO
As for AR-15s vs AKs, they both have their strong points. It makes sense to have either or both - being without a long gun is not good. You can get a good AK for the price of a crappy AR. You will probably prefer the ergonomics of the AR, and will get better accuracy with it. They are both plenty reliable. They are chambered in quite different calibers. There's a lot to consider! I don't believe there will be such a ban, even when the Democrats win.
I think this is a lot of hype to boost sales. mark |

I had the talk last night with my very much anti wife last night while watching 60 Minutes as they did features on Obama and Hillary Clinton.
I'd told her to expect this year to be "the year of the gun" and that I will be making purchases between now and roughly election day toward a cache of weapons. She asked why I "need so many guns" and my response was that I'd be using them to hunt, toward sport (3-Gun), and most importantly to do so as a pre-emptive move against a federal ban as per the two gun ban bills in play current, the as I expect not beneficial decision to come from the SCoTUS decision toward DC, and the very likely election of Obama as PoTUS and that he is very much an avowed anti-gun person. I also added that as we live in MA which is one of the three most restrictive states in the union toward firearms it would very likely adopt whatever the Feds/SCoTUS allows as it did with the AWB I to which it still keeps as basis of law at the state level. I told her I plan to purchase in '08 - '09: * Two shotguns (one each pump and semi-auto) * Two hunting rifles (one each magazine fed bolt action and lever action) * One sporting rifle (very likely a Magpul Masada/Bushmaster ACR) * An AR stripped lower to sit on * Two more pistols (a S&W revolver and an autoloader either S&W M&P, Sig P22X, or Glock) * A PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) .22 caliber air rifle for varmint/small game control * A BB or .177 caliber air rifle for firearms introduction & instruction and plinking with my 5 yr. old daughter this spring and my 18 mo. old son down the road when he hits an age where he's seeming to me able to process and digest the information It'll be coin but I told her the cost will only be higher down the road post ban if even available muchless allowed. I am not going to wait out a second ban at a duration of 10, 15, or even 20 yrs. to be able to buy a firearm for me, or my children, again. By then I'll be nearly 50 to 60 and they 11/15 to 21/25 yrs. old...and that is too old and too long a wait. As well I reminded her of the situation for the citizens of England and Australia post firearm ban and said it's better to have and not need than to need and not have lawful allowed access. - Janq P.S. - I didn't mention the additional cost of reloading equipment that I also plan to acquire this year. :\

Guns and Presidential Elections
Today we had 51 people attend a CHL class.
Everything went well...as well as can be expected. Last month was had 80. The month before that we had 54. Next month we are having another class that is already beggining to fill up. It seems that there is no end in sight. ![]() One common comment that seems to be re occuring in each class is that the upcoming presidential election had forced people to get off of their tails and get a permit to tote. There seems to be a lot of worry that a Democrat will take over the helm and mess things up for gunowners. Without getting too political and getting the thread shut down, what say you? Has it caused you to stockpile ammo, buy new guns or finally get a permit to carry while you can? Or do you even care? Lets hear it.

It's what finally got me to go take the class and get my permit, I've been meaning to do it for years, but just kept put'n it off. With the political outlook look'n like it might make a hard left turn in the near future, I figured I'd better get it done now.
