My point earlier was based on your parameters, price, outher Family members
being around. The 410 pump shotgun can easily be handled by Women and if needed by teens, the 410 is NOT the biggest out there. But I wouldn't want to be shot by one. Good Luck in your choice.

I'd look around a bit and maybe make friends with some of the guys at the local gun shop. Let them know what you want and what your budget is. I picked up a S&W model 10 (mfg'd 1959) with a 4" heavy barrel for $125 not too long ago. It is an ex PD gun, had a lot of finish wear, some end shake on the cylinder, and looked like it had been thrown down someones driveway...repeatedly. Despite this, it shoots just fine (really well actually) and makes an excellent truck gun. I got it for a song because it was more profitable for them to sell it to me as-is and ugly than invest in a refinish before they could sell it.

Great advice whoever said take yourself and girlfriend to a range that rents pistols and bring someone along that knows guns-- You may find out that you like to shoot--
I just orderd a S&W 642 up here in MN through a police supply store for $365-- They go for about $400 at most shops-- I have owned a few relovers (S&W) and they hold their resale value pretty good, so if you think of buying a gun as an investment it makes the $$$ leaving your hands not so bad-- You would be suprised at how well you can learn to shoot with a CCW class or another class-- I thought I learned some good stuff back in the old days of the USMC as a MP-- Point shooting was just coming up in the shooting circle and has now been taught for years-- When I just went through my CCW class the instructer had us point shooting out to 7 yards (most gun fights will take place within this range) and taught us how to do this with only 100 rounds-- Just telling you all lthis to build up YOUR confidance-- Start out at 3 feet and keep moving out from there is the general idea-- That's my 2 cents adn Good Luck--

how cheap is cheap? you can find used pistols on the web for less than 300 bucks, say 40-50 bucks shipping, 30-50 bucks with your ffl. that is about 400 bucks. JG sales is selling that P6 sig sauer for 250. buds is selling a 2nd gen glock 22 for 330 bucks.
however, I would like to second MitchellCT's reply. I guess in Florida you can lit up a burglar easily but here in the northeast US we would face a much harder scrutiny.
