I shot one deer twice with a .40 caliber. My first round hit him right in the face. I found out later that it did angle down into the neck. It got up and ran a couple of yards. I shot him again, right behind the shoulder and he died.
I shot another deer with a .40 caliber in the head and he died right away. Another deer I shot with a 12 gage slug. I shot him in the head, this obviously did the trick. The cool thing was I parked my patrol car so that the in car cam got a 90 degree video of the deer's brains blowing out the side of its head. I think that animals, just like humans are hard to predict. Some will just die and others will fight for a long time. The perfect caliber is the one you have on you. But if you were buying a gun just for that purpose, don't chose a light caliber. Killing is messy no mater man or beast and often doesn't look like you thought it would before you pulled the trigger. Remember to take extra time to think about your backdrop, angle of your shot and all of that. If the deer is wounded, then you shouldn't be under duress like you would be in a gun fight, so take your time and make safety priority number one. |

Yup. Sever the spinal cord and that's it. But again, like others have said, when the moment comes it's easier said than done.

If you sever the spinal cord at the head like everybody has said it stops all brain function to any organs ie heart lungs and the animal dies, but there have been storys where deer were shot in the head and later woke up in eithe the pickup bed or the garage or basement and the deer was really unhappy and let his displeasure be known

Lacking a for-sure headshot, I think HotGuns's approach is the best.
It depends on just how "crippled" or "wounded" the subject deer is. If it ain't a for-sure headshot, I don't think I'd be using a handgun of any type. Probably wouldn't go for the butt-shot, even with a .460 Weatherby....

Right in the ear works as well. Their skull isn't particularly rugged, but you want to make sure you have a pretty perpendicular shot so the round penetrates and doesn't ricochet off. I usually shoot right in front of the base of the ear (the temple). It's 100% so far.
If you're talking about hunting deer with a handgun, I'd have to go no lighter than a 10mm/.41 magnum, using a good hollow point (Hornady HP/XTP works very well). Dan
