Dispatching a Deer? (Caliber in question)
I have read up plenty as far as calibers and their usefullness on humans, however my question is more directed towards wildlife; deer to be exact. Would a 9mm be "enough" bullet to kill an injured deer, or would a heavier bullet be needed?
Odd question, I know, but entertain me. ![]()

Deer have been taken with a 22. 9mm will work to dispatch an injured deer. It'll also work to take down a 2 legged predator.

I am not a hunter so I am ignorant on these things, but where do you shoot a deer if it is injured to assure a "humane" death?

If you can get a headshot, a 9mm will more than do the job, as will a .22lr.

Head or neck shot will put it down instantly. Don't put more 9mm rounds in it's chest unless that's all you can hit, it won't do much to hasten the end.

oh yeah, a 9 mm will dispatch a wounded or injured deer, just use the Reminton 147 grain HPs to make it efficient!
good luck! :D

I finished off a downed buck several years ago with my NAA .22 LR mini.
One round, just back of the ear & angled forward & down.... |

I tried to dispatch a deer once, but he wouldn't answer his radio.

A hurt deer that is not dead is can go from laying there motionless to thrashing and rolling all over the place trying to get up when it cant. Sometimes it is not as easy as it sounds.
Sometimes trying to get a head shot can be challenging. The angle of the shot makes all the difference in the world. When I " dispatch" a deer. I will try for two areas. A shot standing in front of it while shooting it trough the eyeball works well. Also at the base of the skull when standing behind one. The trick there is to be sure not to shoot to low or the shot will angle through the throat without killing it. When they are thrashing around bleating and squalling, I dont mess around. I use the 12 guage with double ought and blast them in the head...while standing at least 10 yards away. If you dont, you will likely get some blood, hair and brain matter on you. Dont ask.
