New shooter (my daughter)
I thought I would share a break through I had with my daughter. Some of you may recall I purchased a Browning .22 HotPink a few weeks ago. As soon as I picked it up I "encouraged" the wife to come with me to the range to try it out. She was hesitant at first but after she tried it a few times and was doing very well. She didn't express any enjoyment so I thought it was another failed attempt and left it at that.
This last weekend I decided it was time to take the kids 13yo daughter and 11yo son. The son took right too it like it was old business since he had shot earlier this year with me. My daughter on the other hand was quit another story. She sat back off the line with her arms folded and was showing no interest. I tried to coax her into firing a few times and she declined forcefully with the "I don't like gun's" or the "I will never have to fire a gun". I tried a few times, made a few comments to show her silly she was being. She was afraid of the recoil and wasn't putting any faith in her old man. ![]() Finally after she talked to her brother she agreed to try 1 shot. She worked up the nerve and I setup everything for her. She aimed and fired and hit the target from 15yards in the ring. 1ST SHOT EVER!!Woohoo!!! But I didn't show any emotion over it because I was afraid I would have gotten the typical teen rebellion from her. I complimented her on her shot and she responded with "that was easy....can I do some more?" I about fell over considering the time she put me through. I reloaded the magazine and went through all the safety tips once again and let her go. Complimenting every shot and trying to encourage her. She even hit a bullseye in that next magazine. ![]() After that we continued the rotation between the 3 of us. When we wrapped it up she asked if she could keep her target so she could show her mom. I was in heaven and to top it off when she got home I heard her and her mom talking about how fun it was, and the wife congratulating her on the bullseye!! ![]() I just thought I would share 1 man's break through and a little of my joy!! |

That's a turning point age. You're lucky you caught her in time. She may still turn away, but she will come back. From 13 to 18, Dad's are a non-entity (unless they need money). I've been through it with two daughters. Don't be discouraged, they will come back. Both my girls now have CCW licenses and carry regularly.

Congrats. It is fun to watch your kids shoot and enjoy it. Glad she is coming around, it might pay off for her later in life.

That is great. And she got over the natural fear of any first-timer to guns.
Took my fiance out with a the SP101 last year, nervous, did not know what to do, I said well just line up the sights like I suggested. Boom. CENTER bullseye. Well she thought she was Annie Oakley after that. I still hear about it even now. Congratulations to you for taking her out and letting her see how great it is for herself instead of oh dad do we HAVE to go out the range again. She will be out there more than you will, from now on.
