Wondering if anyone has ever been to the public range on forest rd 88 in the Ocala national forest?

Hi Lurch - I've been there (moved here from the Orlando area last summer). I heard it was closed, but that's been a month ago. If you go there, try your best to avoid the weekends! Saturday and Sunday the range is packed with people who actually make a good case for why some people shouldn't be allowed to own a firearm and who shouldn't be allowed to reproduce! If you go on Monday, take your own target frame as the ones the range provides are shot to pieces. Wednesday morning the range used to be closed for cleaning until around 11 or so. If you get there around 9 and help the caretaker, you get to shoot (when finished) while the gate is locked. Wednesday is (was) the day the caretaker replaced the bad target frames with fresh 2x4's. But don't get too excited as they'll be destroyed by noon Saturday.

The downside to that range is that it's unattended. There is no rangemaster and it's self-policing. You'll be lucky (when crowded) to go 10 minutes without someone wanting to call cease-fire so they can check/change targets.

Word to the wise: be careful and be armed - always. It don't trust but a few people I've met there. The rule is "NO LOADED FIREARMS UNLESS ACTIVELY SHOOTING AT THE BENCH." Having said that, I doubt anyone from the State will attend your funeral so just play it safe and smart.
