I can't recall the name of the maker of those blue foam plugs. ~30db noise reduction, though. They're good enough and fit tightly enough that they work okay by themselves.

Beyond that, I have a set of electronic Silencio muffs, rated at ~26db NRR. Together, they work very well. This is how I normally do range shooting. The only real exception is when I'm doing a class. The electronic muffs have a booster/filter for speech, but that only works without the ear plugs, else it's simply too darned quiet ... as you found out.

When shooting in the field, the plugs are enough. In enclosed spaces at the range, adding the muffs changes the effect of the pressure change quite a bit.

These are the 33NRR plugs I use.

I once used cotton swabs when I forgot my headset, and they worked just as good.

Indoors shooting the 10mm or the 9x25 I use NPR33's and MSA Supreme Pro Earmuffs. Outdoors I just use the MSA's.

I just had a trip down memory lane episode..When I was in the military and we didn't happen to have any hearing protection we would use cigarette filters to stick in our ears ,they weren't perfect but they did cut down on the noise enough it didn't sound like you were watching the test pattern on the tv

I know a lot of artillerymen who can't hear well. It is not because they decided not to wear ear protection, it is because all they they had at the time was cigarette butts -- but that was a long long time ago.
