Yeah, probably, but pretty much everyone does it, need to be able to hear commands and communicate. Comm is key.

As far as the OP's statement that it is easy to shoot unmoving targets while protected: try to find a range that isnt so static, where you, the targets, or both, can move. Also, clay pigeons can gelp you learn dynamics of shooting at something moving.

I had my 45acp discharged in my bathroom and had no hearing loss or ringing in my ears afterward, now a 357 or high powered rifle round same situation and my ears would be ringing,I know cause I shot a 357 outside no hearing protection years ago and my ears rang for hours afterwards, during a confrontation/home invasion you won't notice anything til after it's over

You wont notice the noise at the time ( if you need to shoot indoors ) you however will notice the tennonitius ( sp ?) (the ringing in the ears that can block some tones ) afterwards. If you shoot enough unprotected( or around other noises that are loud unprotected )then that becomes perminant ( dont ask me how i know lol ) . Tho shooting down a hallway may well " ring your bell " for a day or two , and may induce a flinch which causes your accuracy to go to hell at the time , it is unlikely you will suffer any permanent hearing loss from home defense without " ears " on . Dont however practice this or any other shooting without hearing protection , take that from a lip reader .

Unless somebody fires a LAW or RPG next to you in a house a short gunfight will not cause permanent hearing loss but loud noises overtime will, after working in construction and manufacturing over time it took a toll on my hearing to the point I couldn't hear birds sing, over time some has come back but I still say huh a lot

Does anyone think the noise issue should be factored in selecting a caliber?

E.g., Which caliber will produce the least noise but still be effective?

Would 9 mm be preferable from the noise point of view than .45?

(I'm not trying to restart a caliber dispute. Just wondering if noise should be taken into consideration in selecting a HD caliber.)

My father was in the pacific during world war 2. While on okinawa he dove behind a rock to avoid a hand grenade which did go BOOM. He couldnt hear for 3 days. Flash foward to his young buck 16 yr old son trying to sneak into the house way way way after curfew...That old guy with the blown up ears heard me every time..EVERY TIME!!!

"That you Charlie?" crap.."yea Pop its me" ..."guess we will talk in the morning" ..."ok pop, night pop".

So, No I dont think it will permantly damage your hearing..never hurt my pops hearing, bless his heart!

How does it go?
Better to be deaf, then carried by 6?
Something like that...

Don't fire your gun - better you should be injured, dead, raped, or maimed than stress your ears or eyes.

I know from experience deer hunting--you don't hear the shots (or, for that matter, feel the recoil), but your ears WILL ring afterwards.

I keep a pair of Peltor Tac-6's next to my bedroom gun. If there's time, I will try and put 'em on--at max gain, you can hear the cat try to sneak down the hall...if there isn't time, well, I'll deal with ringing ears.
