The lesson I would take from the NIH article is that since the hearing damage appears to be chemically based rather than mechanically based, that taking aspirin and vitamin E may ameliorate permanent damage. A lesson I will take is if I am exposed to a loud noise without hearing protection some over the counter nutrients would not hurt and just might help.

I have fired a 357 & a 45, inside at night, and never heard a thing. The adrenaline dump pretty much shuts your hearing down. It did seem to effect my hearing for a few hours after the adrenaline wore off, but nothing permanent. The muzzle flash is not blinding. We were taught in the academy and night shooting training, to use the flash to sight your target for follow-up shots. After the first shot, the nightsights are pretty useless, but you an use the flash to realign your front sight.
