Are these FACTORY S&W Model 29 grips?
I bought this gun at a gunshow and it doenst have the grips I see on all the other Model 29's everywhere else. The bigger ones I mean. They seem too small to me. I have never seen them on another Model 29 before either. Just curious.
Also its a 29-3 if that helps. Thanks for any help. ![]() |

Those do indeed look like factory grips in the "Magna" style. My 15-4 snubnose and K-22 have them. Whether your Model 29 came from the factory wearing them is another question, but yes, they do appear to be factory grips.

Since your gun has a target trigger and target hammer, I'm going to say those are not the grips that came on the gun. Those are the standard service grips. Yours probably came with target grips.

I've never seen a Model 29 with factory original Magna grips. It's always been marketed as a premium revolver and came pretty dressed out. This included the over sized Target grips.
My Model 29 that I purchased new in 1980. ![]() Actually the Magna grips aren't bad and some folks really like 'em. You might want to try them at the range. |

Yes, those are standard S&W "Magna" style service stocks. The diamond around the screw escutcheon means they were made before 1968.
They were/are not standard on the Model 29. Likely a previous owner put them on. The Model 29-3 was introduced in 1982 and discontinued in 1988.

I see. Thank you all for your help. I did try them at the range and didnt like them much. I have big hands and couldnt get a good grip on them. Im trying to locate target style grips but I cant seem to find any. I found ONE pair and the guy wanted $200 for them. I dont want them that badly.
![]() Im going to get some Hogue grips, wood finger grooves maybe. |

M29's came with target grips. Those diamond magnas are nice though.

Last night we watched Dirty Harry with my dad.... now I want a model 29! My model 27 has the smaller grips, where the trigger ends up in front of your middle finger, forcing your trigger finger to uncomfortably have to reach out and downwards(look at the first and subsequent images already in this thread to visualize the differences). A quick fix is to lower your grip and just hold tight, but I really do want to replace with the larger grips or some Hogue grips to place the grip better. But that's just my own choice.

A Model 29 is a great thing to have in the collection. I picked up a 29-2 a couple of weeks ago. I'm not going to fire it too much, to keep it pristine, but it's just an incredible shooter!
