Customer Shot During Store Robbery

Customer Fatally Shot During Western Store Robbery
Stolen Item Could Lead Authorities To Killer

POSTED: 10:27 am CST November 21, 2005
UPDATED: 10:33 am CST November 21, 2005

HOUSTON -- A customer who unknowingly walked in on a robbery at a southeast Houston western store was shot and killed Saturday.

Police told KPRC Local 2 that two men shot store clerk Joe Lazano in the chest inside the Gordon's Man Store on Broadway Street and Cypress Street at about 5:20 p.m.

Customer Francisco Luis, 55, of Pasadena, was fatally shot when he walked in on the robbery.

Investigators said the items the robbers stole could be a key to tracking them down.

"Those were khaki-colored Polo boots. And those would be something that would be distinctive. Maybe somebody knows someone that wears boots of that nature and that lives in this particular general area. They might be able to help us," Houston Police Department Homicide Sgt. Mark Newcomb said.

Lazano was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in an unknown condition.

Investigators said the robbers jumped into a car driven by a third person.

Houston police have released the following descriptions of the robbers:

Robber 1: Hispanic man in his early 20s, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a skinny build, medium complexion, collar-length hair, dressed in black jeans and a black-hooded jacket.
Robber 2: Hispanic man in his early 20s, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build, dark complexion, dressed in black jeans and a black jacket, seen wearing distinctive Khaki-colored Polo boots stolen during robbery.
Robber 3: Described only as a Hispanic man driving a late model four-door gray vehicle with tinted windows.

Anyone with information should call the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.

Nice © statement QK

Well - have to feel here that had victim been entering store in condition yellow, and been armed - this could have ended differently. Of course 2 BG's is bad news from get go but - alertness could at least have allowed for getting hell out or - quickly finding some cover.

Hard to say but a tragic case that's for sure. I hope the slimeballs are apprehended, and soon.

Shooting witnesses is starting to be the norm. I wonder if the clerk would have been shot anyway.

I wholeheartedly agree, but people have been killed for a whole lot less, which is why I carry....

It's sad and I hope the BG's are caught and get the death penalty.

I have a method to walking into a business. The very first thing I do is make eye contact with the person closest to the door. I know immediately if there's a problem.

Not too many places short of a federal building or a police station that we are safe anymore folks.

It's a shame, but we gotta be on condition red for at least 80% of our day if we are in a big city.

Kids in the DC area have been killed over things like brand name jackets and sneakers...... It's just so damn unreal that life is so cheap!
