hoppes#9 stinks? sorry to hear that, it brings back fond memories every time I use it from decades gone by. Honestly no more "stink" then isopyropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Anything strong is going to have a smell to it.

I use Hoppes Elite thanks to JD and Lima. It works great and has no smell at all (well, compared to Hoppes #9!)

Bore Cleaner

I use a lot of this at the gunshop.Gunslick - Gun Care Made Easy - Cleaners-Degreasers

Works great and low odor. I use a little tiny bit of Gun Scrubber to clean the residue out and X1 grease for lube.https://host8.successfulhosting.com/...2&bestseller=Y

I clean and care for tons of range rentals.

I don't suppose anybody noticed that the OP did not specify the brand of solvent he's using?

Why are so many people assuming it's Hoppe's #9?

I use Hoppes and Breakfree CLP. Sorry you think your gun solvent stinks, but I love the smell of most of all the solvents. I think all the years of smelling JP-8 jet fuel has ruined me. I tried some Weaponshield as a free sample and it smelled like cinnamon and worked well...you should give it a try.

Break Free and other similar products probably should be used outdoors if at all possible to prevent inhalation of the volatile solvent vapors. At least take care to have windows open and fans ventilating the area, and do consider possible explosive hazard if the concentration of the solvent builds too high. You can buy inexpensive activated charcoal masks in some paint stores to wear while using this stuff.

Hoppes is a different story. It is a man's cologne. Great stuff. Wonderful aromatic qualities.

Cleaning is a breeze after the first time you use it.
CLICK HERE to visit their website.
Weapon Sheild smells great and I use it for external lube and then Slide Glide internal. That's on pistol not me.
Question-how do you use it for cleaning? Dip brushes etc. and then use like Hoppe's ??

I use Gunslick (Outer's) Foaming Bore Cleaner. Be careful with it in gas guns as it will foul up the gas tube if precautions aren't taken. There is no smell and, if I remember correctly, it is non-toxic. It is the best copper solvent I've used.

I then clean up with G96. Developed for ballistic missiles, it's kind of an old style CLP. It smells somewhat like bananas, but not strong. I spray it on, wipe it off after a minute or so, and then leave a thin film in the barrel and any friction areas.

If I'm concerned about a lot of friction and heat, I use Gunslick lubricant. It's anhydrous graphite in a suspension, and is more like a light grease. It works very well on 1911 frame rails. It was still present and working after rapid firing 150 rounds with 2 minute breaks every 50 rounds.

Post all good cleaners are stinky and/or make your brain go gooey

Let's see. I use Outers Nitro Solvent. It's stinky, for sure, as all organic solvents are. They are toxic too, hurt your brain, liver, kidney and lungs but some people are known to inhale organic solvents to get high. Go figure. I also use Gunslick's Copper-Klenz which is a different kind of beast, containing 2-aminoethanol.
In any event, I started wearing rubber gloves and sit next to a good 12-inch table top fan running at full speed to get the fumes out.
