I keep a significant amount of ammo in my "gun room". I use spare ammo cans. My Fire Marshall buddy (shooter) says there is no real danger during a cook-off due to the quick disbursement of pressure. Use common sense and check you home for fire hazards. Safety first.

Most of my ammo is kept in ammo cans, some of it is kept in plastic ammo boxes outside of the ammo cans, since currently all the ammo cans are full. This is for pistols, since that is what I have the most rounds for.

Most rifle and shot gun ammo is kept in the gun safe, with the exception of a about a a case and a half of 16 gauge which is kept by the pistol stuff in a room off the side of the garage. The safes also contain powder and primers for reloading.

I don't worry too much about the cooking off of ammo due to the fact that it really doesn't pose any serious danger. Might sound pretty scarry but it isn't going to penetrate your clothing or skin and do damage.

Keep the stuff dry, make sure kids or idiot adults don't go playing with it, and your good to go.

i've seen what happens when ammo cooks off. it seems scary when your moving towards it but it doesn't do much damage. i use ammo cans to store all my ammo, powder, primers, etc.
