Ammunition Storage

Question: Many of us store 500 to 1000 rounds of ammo, some of us store much more. My question is where and how to store it? I understand about keeping it away from kids, babies, bad guys, so I am assuming that all are kept under lock of some kind......but what about fire? If there is a fire in the house, that ammo suddenly had escalated an already very bad situation. If any rounds go off, I am assuming the local FD will vacate, plus you have dangers to any neighbors, etc.....any thoughts on the subject?

Keep mine in my locking gun cabinet, while keeping a few loaded magazines handy in case someone did break in and I need them in a seconds notice. But I don't have to worry about kids yet so I can pretty much put them around the house, know you can't when kids are around but I keep a few handy, the rest in the cabinet, but do sleep with the cabinet at night next to the bed unlocked just in case.

I used to think about telling my local volunteer fire department about that. For what little action they see, I figure it would make their life more interesting for a day. The neighbors? I hadn't thought of that. My place would definitely make the 10 o'clock news. I could only hope there would not be any injuries of innocent civilians. If I was there when it started...I would warn them though, and they'd be taking cover with me. Indeed...ammo cans are good storage.

Ammunition does not pose much of a threat in a house fire, yes, it will cook off, but no, it's not going to cause a neighborhood evac.

I keep my ammo in good old fashioned ammo cans, and I store those in one of those el'cheapo folded metal gun lockers that I took all the shelving out of.

I keep ammo in two safes, along with my weapons...no one is going to carry either away.

Sixto is right. If you have visions of a thousand rounds whizzing around a house fire, ain't gonna happen. Ammo cans to keep them dry is all I do.

OK, so I guess there is something I don't understand about ammo. I would think the heat and fire would "cook them off" as was stated about. If that were to happen, there would be bullets and shell casing flying in directions opposite each other. There would not be the speed that you would get out of a gun, due to the lack of a barrel, but would this not increase the danger considerably? What am I missing about the nature of ammunition in a fire?

iv'e always wondered about ammo
during a house fire.(god forbid that happens
here or to any other members.)
hey sixto, are you suggesting ammo cans
are a better way to store ammo or any type
of good quality type metal/steel lockable
container.i also have had thoughts about
ammo going off it every direction during
a fire. thanks in advance for some input.

I would think that, unless you kept them out on the kitchen table, that the fact they are in something would make them heat up slower and in the case (heh, sorry) of a shotgun shell the plastic would melt off and IF it got further the powder would just fizzle. In the event your brass ammo got affected I would think that it would simply pop from the heat build up in the brass and not so much the explosion that is seen when the primer is struck.

Then again, I am a computer guy and not that big in to the physics of ammunition.

Mythbusters had an episode lately where they burned some ammo (including 0.50 cal) in a camp fire. They had some bullets wizzing around, but they caused minimum damage. I believe the reason is that the bullet casing will not be able to withstand the pressure without the support of the barrel. So the bullet blows up much earlier and never reaches the pressure/velocity it would if fired in a gun.
