Is there a device to pick up spent steel casings at the range?

I'm trying to figure out if there is a device that aids in the cleanup of spent steel casings (wolf) at the range. I sell the casings to a recycling company per pound...much better then throwing them away. I envision a device that looks like a metal detector, but with a magnet on the base instead.

The coloring of the casing (charcoal) makes it hard to see in the dirt for retrieval and my AK spits them out upwards of 15 feet away.

A magnet.

I remember seeing a while back a large magnet on wheels... If you're fairly handy, I'm sure you could rig up something like that of your own.

Sky Pilot
Home Depot sold driveway magnets not long ago, they were wheeled, fairly wide and had a push handle; they were designed to pick up nails from your driveway, thus the name,
I've also seen Boat Magnets, sizable Alnico retrieving magnets intended to be lowered from a boat to salvage ferrous objects from the bottom.
An interesting idea, withal!

Thats what I saw! I think I would modify it slightly buy putting larger wheels on it depending on the surface of the deck at your range.

i shoot in the desert a lot and practice moving drills so the spent cases are usually in an expansive area. i recently found one in the space between my trucks hood and windshield.

Speaking of trucks, I know they make a magnet to mount on the bumper of a truck or ATV for the same purpose SkyPilot mentioned, and again, I'm sure it wouldn't be tough to make one of your own design.

Or you could just use a traditional brass catcher and be done with it.

No, it was a magnetic bar that went the width of the vehicle and hung beneath the front or rear bumper; as you drove along, it would pick up metal in its path.

Yep, those wheeled magnets that they use for picking up nails after a roofing job would do the trick.

Or just get yourself an old speaker and rip the cone etc off of it, these magnets are pretty powerful, and put some type of handle on it that holds it the right distance off the ground and it should do the trick. Will save a lot of bending over. If you don't have one stop by the local car audio place, I am sure they would be more than willing to part with a blown up woofer.
