I've shot competition archery, including shootouts (that is where the real pressure is) and really never had much of an issue. I think this was more of a mental issue of my score is a combination of time and accuracy. I was not looking to impress anybody, just wanted to do what I know I can do...
Watching some of the other new shooters (LEOs included) you could see the different styles and training or lack thereof. I was 1 of 2 that was shooting IWB, and the only one tucked for each string. Now that I think about it, I was the only one effectively using a cover garment. Everyone else was OC shooting. There was one that I hoped learned that you don't wear baggy pants and an over sized shirt...especially untucked. Every draw pulled his pants up 4+" before his weapon cleared the holster, and got caught up in his shirt, same with his mags. I only talked (well, answered questions) with one guy about CC. Do you carry every day? Isn't it a burden? Do you carry to work? Ammunition to go has either stopped carrying the Armscor or they are having supplier issues, either way they don't show it any more. The only other place that I found it was up $40 per 500 ($285 - 1000ct). I need to find another source of cheap ammo number one quick. $60 per 250ct is about the max I can afford. Even reloading was $300 for 1000 and that was just brass and lead, still have primers, powder and equipment to go. HUGE startup cost, not sure when the crossover will be effective. I certainly can not afford that program.

Thanks for sharing Sticks. IDPA shooting is going to be my next step in carrying and shooting a gun. I just started reading up on it and hope to work out the logistics and cost associated with it. This should be an Olympic sport. It would sure beat watching syncronized swimming.

Man, you're lucky.
I have been wanting do do some at the gun club here and they only do it on weeknights. My wife works nights, and I have a kid, so no way to do it. Your post even makes me want to do it more. I love to shoot in a competitive environment. I was on the rifle team in High School, and have shot sporting clays competitively for the past 5 or 6 years until I moved and started law school, now I don't have the time or money to do that. I want to shoot IDPA so bad I can't stand it. I have even thought about hiring a baby sitter, but can't really justify the cost and effort, since the matches don't end until 9:30 or 10:00 at night. Good luck and keep having fun, that's what it's all about. (that and possibly saving your life someday)

Can you shoot your own reloads at these matches? This is the only way I could afford to do it. NCH

I shot my first IDPA match today after talking about it with a local gun store owner who is a member of the club hosting the match. I doubt I will ever go to the old range again, even thinking about standing still and shooting at a paper target puts me to sleep now! We only did five stages most likely due to the heat (temps in triple digits down here in southcentral Texas); but I had fun and did pretty well with my XD45 (my carry gun). It is more along what I was used to in the military, and I feel less like I am wasting ammo like I did shooting at the range. It is challenging and fun, and very addicting; the matches here are monthly and I think I will be going back regularly...
The great thing about it is by watching the others in your group, you not only learn from your own mistakes but their's as well. What was funny was during my "first-time shooter" briefing, the range official said I will have a million things going through my head when I heard the timer go off, and to be honest it was the complete opposite...I can't remember thinking about a think except the targets. The only time I goofed badly was when I was worried about exposing myself from cover on the last stage, I was thinking about it so hard that I didn't focus on the target and...well, let's just say I didn't do as well as I should have! But that is the second point to this kind of shooting (after having fun), it is a great way to learn from your mistakes! I want to thank everyone from the River City Shooters who not only put on today's match, but also were so much help to me during my first day out! I'll see y'all again next month! Cheers! M2 |

Buy a baby sitter (portable DVD player) and that will help. Go and watch at least. You might come across someones significant other who brings their kids and could maybe help watch yours. This is all providing that the club does not have a "No Children" policy.

To NC Hornet: reloads where good where I shot. I loaded up 200 rounds on my buddies Dillon.
To Sticks: My friends and I are paying about 15 cents a round loading 40 s&w now. When we rebuy materials price increases will make them go up to about 20 cents a round. ($100 for 500 rounds). Start up is pricey but a Dillon will last a life time and you'll make it back eventually.

You wouldn't be referring to me would you???? I was the guy with the blue shirt and cargo pants(took cover from the rain in the same place). I guess I didnt realize that when drawing my pants would rise up..... I guess I need to gain more weight. The mag thing did become a PITA. I was in the same mind frame as you were, practice like you carry. Any suggestions that could help things go smoother? I had a great time on Sat and plan on going back. |
