I went to my first IDPA shoot Saturday

Initially I just planned on watching the local IDPA to see if it something that I would like to join. I read their rules and regs, and to become a member of the local, I have to become a member of the national, so I read up on theirs as well.

As the week went on, I started thinking more and more about participating, but was still waffling on it. When I left the house, I brought ammo and mags just in case. By the time I made the 30 minute drive to the range I had pretty made up my mind to shoot.

Turns out it was classification day, so everyone had to shoot the basic course, and one blind scenario. This was both good and bad. Good that I would get my classification to join up, bad that it was going to be a long boring day - that got rained out by 2:30 in the afternoon. One stage left and the new shooters (fairly large group of us) were only half way through it.

My first time up to shoot -
I got to the line, wearing my normal CC gear (Baby Eagle, Homemade Crossbreed style holster, IWB and tucked, tack light, spare mag in my knife sheath + one in each back pocket - not normal carry) and was waiting for the Safety officers command to load and so on. He looks down at my hip, looks up at me , down to my hip again, walks behind me over to my left side, looks at my hip, back to my face , then back to my right. He asks if I am left or right handed, and something else that I forgot because by now I have realized that he is thinking that I showed up to the line with nothing to shoot. . I tell him that I am right handed and my weapon is on my right hip (as I pat it). He said "You conceal very well." To which I respond, "Well, that is the point isn't it?"

How did I shoot -
I have no idea. They use the limited Vickers scoring which involves complex math, and they usually post the results within the next two days. Personally, I think I shot like on the basic stages (READ - I've shot better on my own on three targets). The Blind shoot was a lot of fun, and I did a heck of a lot better. I got nailed for a procedural error (I missed a BG target and stayed out of cover for too long) and hit a GG via shoot through on a BG.

We are supposed to finish the classification next month, and hopefully get to do some scenarios. I am pretty sure I will join up. I need to check with the CFO to see if we can afford the $$$ in ammo.

But did you have fun???
That may be all that counts.

Oh, yeah I had fun. I also got to shoot for the first time under real simulated stress. Nice and calm until I was asked, "Shooter Ready?" then the adrenaline hit. 45 seconds after "Range Clear", I was all nice and calm again.

By the time I got to the blind scenario I was a bit more under control.

I have been thinking of IDPA as well but the nearest place is over a hour away. I want to go down and observe one weekend. Sounds like you had fun. Good for you. I thought you were required to have your spare mags on your weak side, not in your back pocket?

National rules allow extra magazines to be kept in pocket. I think it does read that at least 1 has to be on belt carrier, behind the center line of body (3:01+ position).

I just started shooting IDPA. I'm hooked, this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

I shot a IPSC match about two weeks ago and it was great. Isn't it amazing how much pressure a stop watch and a bunch of folks watching you creates? I was shocked at how many misses I had. The ammo does get pricey real fast so I'm thinking of getting a Dillon press this year to feed my new addiction.

If it is over an hour away, I'd just plan on shooting. Why waste a trip down and not have any fun?

New IDPA shooter usually are put in the back of the line so they have a chance to watch and see how other, more experienced, shooters perform. You can do both, watch and shoot.

Glad you had fun Sticks. I got back into IDPA a few months ago and I too am looking into a reloading press. Mine will probably be the Lee 4-Turret press (economics). It WILL get smoother with each match. BTW - our matches are held the third Sunday of each month so if you find yourself bored on a Sunday, make the 2-hour drive south and join us!

I've thought about doing this, but so far to drive. The FL State Coordinator heads the one about 100 miles away...I did take two self-defense pistol courses from him...he used some IDPA set-ups during one of the courses. Great way to see how you shoot under some pressure.
Maybe one of these days...

Stay armed...stay safe!
