Cleaning those Nooks

Usually when I clean my carry, I clean it as well as possible but we all know that a very good detail clean is required after so many thousands of rounds or a passage of time. Dirt gets into small spaces that are generally hard to get to and should be removed. Normally I will use Q-Tips to try and get in there and then use pliers to yank out any leftover cotton. But sometimes this just doesn't cut the proverbial mustard. I was curious what kind of tips any of you all had for getting into these areas that the Q-Tips just won't squeeze into. Maybe wooden toothpicks with something attached?? Let's hear what you all have.

And no, disassembling the block on my HK is not an option. LOL I have no illusions about my attempting to put it back together and the manual says to leave it alone. Thus, I'm inclined to agree.

Nothing I've found works much better than a can of GunScrubber with the plastic nozzle inserted. Make sure to wear safety glasses and to re-oil everything as it will strip every drop of oil.

Though not as small as Q-Tips, if you've got room, I like to use these wherever possible. They don't leave little tufts of cotton behind like Q-Tips.

I use alot of pipe cleaners. Use them on slide rails especially. You can bend them into any shape you need and they are long enough. I also have a limited supply of those hospital q-tips---you know...one swab on the end of a wooden stickand 5-6" long. Those are wound tighter than regular q-tips and the cotton fibers don't come off them as easily.

Me too. Get the real cotton ones at your local tobacco shop. They're very cheap and you don't get hit with ridiculous shipping costs. I was surprised at how many types and sizes they have, thin, thick, even tapered. I'd stay away from the type that have metal bristles mixed in. Also stay away from the colored arts and crafts ones.

I use these cotton tipped applicators which are about 6" long. They don't leave anything behind if they're pretty much saturated with some kind of solvent/lubrication agent.

the hosp q-tips are excellent - the bare end also makes for a nice pusher to work patches into tight spots - I work in an OR so clean but unusable stuff make it's way into my cleaning kit - the gauze sponges of mult sizes are great also - no lint from these
