The closest to me is Gander Mountain, about 10 miles from me. About 40 miles away is a great gunshop in Valatie (pronounced like Valaysha), NY that is owned by a great woman. She says she's one of the very few female gunshop owners in the country.

mr surveyor
there are numerous gun shops and/or pawn shops that "specialize" in guns within 5 minutes-30 minutes of my house. I frequent 4 of them pretty often (o.k., really often). My favorite is only about 5-10minutes away, and his hours are no earlier than 10:00 a.m. andl as late at night as you want to drop by He will walk out from his house to the shop at 2:00 a.m. to meet you, if you plan ahead. He always has a stash of Thompson Cigar Club cigars, a fridge full of beer, and plenty of Kimbers, Sigs, Rugers, Berettas and a few other handguns, not to mention various rifles (lots of AR's and a few "custom built rifles) and a few shotguns. The other shops are pretty much "business", but this one is a gun lover's heaven out in the sticks..pure East Texas country boy hang out

Mig, I'm from a little further north and know all the stores you are talking about very well.
Here's my thoughts;
Target World- you're right, they have an amazing selection. I know the owner, manager and several of the older employee's very well and on a personal basis. I have to say this though- T.W. has the highest prices of an independent in the area, and most of the employees don't know squat and are very much the famed mall ninja. I don't shop there for mainly for that reason, and some others I won't mention here.

Bass Pro- The have a decent selection, of hunting type guns with a few SD types tossed in the mix, but bring your mortgage guy along with you, they have the same problems as T.W. It is an impressive store though.

If you want a old school good ole boy gun store, check out the "other" Shooters Supply in Loveland. Great guys to deal with, and their prices can't be beat. Down side is the on hand stock isn't all that impressive, so if you are a tire kicker, it isn't the place to waste everyones time. But, if you know what you want its the place to go in the tristate area IMO.

I live in the country and about 5 miles away is a small town of about 200 people and one red light. It has a gun store ! This guy does a little gunsmithing, sells a little retail, has a few used guns for sale, but will order whatever NIB you'd like (legal) and add 10%. He'll also do a transfer for $10.

About 30 minutes away in a larger town (20K population) there is a mom and pop store that is quite a bit larger. He'll also order whatever I need, has a large selection of ammo, and decent inventory of new and used guns. He's been in the gun business a long time. It's a good place to stop off and shoot the breeze during the day.

I give both of these GG's as much business as possible. Neither of them have ranges, they certainly don't mind me CCW, in fact they'd probably chastise me for not.

I can shoot right here at my house, but just recently I joined this range. It's about a 45 minute drive and I wanted to support them though I probably won't go too much. Check it out it's awesome.
