A first long arm for my boy
I've been chewing over the idea of getting my boy his first long arm. For general plinking, after a little looking around, I think this is about the best I can find:
Henry Repeating Arms Rifles However, I probably didn't find all the options available. I also wonder if I should go with a shotgun, since he wants to hunt. In my area, 22s aren't as useful as shotguns for hunting. I remember seeing a long arm advertised recently that came with three different barrels, can't remember if it was a rifle or not. Once I acquire the weapon, I want to get it engraved with a simple "To Son from Dad" kind of thing, but I have no idea where to get this done. Soooo...... suggestions?

How old is your son? It seems the short youth rifles quickly become too small for kids as they grow.

A youth model Remington 870 in 20 gauge can grow with him by replacing the inexpensive stock.

I got my son a stainless Rossi combo. It came with a .22 and .410 barrels and was great for a couple years. It also came with a carrying case. When he was seven, I got him a compact Ruger 308 and some Remington reduced recoil ammo. I shot it first to recoil check it and then he shot it and did fine. Knowing how old your son is would be a great help in giving advice, but that is the route I took.

My six-yr old and I love his Henry Mini-bolt 22. It is a great little rifle.

It has to be a Ruger 10/22 for sure! Something he will grow with. In my opinion, the target model. Get involved with a club that does silhouette. That will teach the basics and composure, depend on some of the members' tutelage. Hunting? Squirrels, rabbit? Sure thing with the 10/22. I'm 43, and I find something new all the time with my 10/22's. Best, customizable, user friendly, workable, maintainable platform ever made.

He's 8. And a half.
I have a 10/22 already, and yes it's great.
