A good smooth boreis the most versatle gun you can buy. It will take any game in N. America large to small and defend very nicely at the same time.

I said the AR, because you never know what the future has in store.

I'm with Sixto; the versatility of the shotgun makes it a must-have. It'll take care of any "problem" you're likely to run into, and will drop most north American game easily if the operator is competent.
Personally, I'd get the Saiga just because A) they're awesome and B) you might not be able to get one by this time next year. Mossberg 590 / Remington 870 would be a close second choice. Just my two cents. Peace, Pete Zaria.

Go with an 870, with the money saved buy a 22 rifle. What still have money left!! Buy a few bricks of 22 and go have fun. Now Im betting you will still have a few bucks left. Get a scope for the 22 or save it for a rainey day I need to get a new gun fund.

I've pretty much decided on an AR and features I would like, now just to get a price structure going.
I have no worldly idea why anyone would buy an 870 OVER an 1100 especially for home defense other then for cost difference, which isn't a huge. Semi-automatic will always get my nod over a pump action. |

Foo, there are a few reasons to have a pump over a semi-auto shotgun. Speed isnt that much different, pumps are generally more reliable, IMHO. Others will probably be able to give more reasons.

I pity the "Foo" (get it!?) who doesn't think a 5.56 with anything other than ball ammo is a good choice for defense.
The .300 will beat you to death as a range toy, shooting a "couple deer" wouldn't justify it for me. I've killed a lot of deer and don't own a magnum rifle. Remington shotguns made today don't do a lot for me. Quality is not what it used to be. Saigas are cool, so it would be my #2 choice. I would DEFINITELY go with an AR. |

Here's a thought: get a Saiga 7.62X39 I love mine, Hunting, self defense, plinking(cheap ammo), and built like a soviet tank.
That Kalishnakov action is incredibly reliable!

I voted other based on what the weapon will be used for and other conditions.......home defense? SHTF defense? urban or rural house?
IMO since you don't have a "collection", do what I did....I got my Mossy500 for home defense first, then got a handgun, then began "collecting", including my AK for SHTF situations strictly home defense=shotgun SHTF weapon=AR if I was in your shoes, with $900 1) Mossy 500 Persuader 7+1 $230 2) get the S&W 442 that you're wanting for CCW that way you've got $$$ for ammo/holster/accessories/etc
