Remington 700 in .308 is going to be right in that range.... you shouldn't have a problem finding one for $600.

Sporterized Mosin-Nagant or Mauser 30.06. Can easily be found in the 300 range, and money left over for some decent optics.

The best deer rifle I ever owned was a 700 BDL in 30-06. Now that I've got more years under my belt, as well as more aches and pains, I'd probably get the same rifle in .308 if I were buying today. For hunting in brush and thickets it's hard to beat a basic Marlin in 30-30. I prefer 165gr to 170gr silvertips for that one.

My own personal favorites for hunting deer in Texas are the 30-06 and the 25-06. I have used both hunting in Central and South Texas with very good results. As far as rifles go you really can't go wrong with any of the current production rifles out there. However, if I were to recommend one it would be either the Tikka T3 or the Remington 700 BDL. Good luck with your search!

For any MI woods I ever hunted in...my Marlin 30-30 was plenty...a great brush gun.
If, however, you want to make that 4-mile shot, then go with some of the above more powerful selections. Can't beat a good 'ole 30-30. OMO, of course.
