Ruger Vaquero

I went to the gun show out in Fayetteville today just to see if they had anything that I really wanted. I have had a "need" for a single action revolver lately and came across a NIB Ruger Vaquero .44 mag. So I ended up bringing her home and have a few questions for the wise ones on here. With my GP 100, I can pretty much shoot any load out of it and have no problems whatsoever. Can I do the same with the Vaquero or is there a limit on what pressures the gun can handle? I hope to get it out to the range in the next week or so to see how she handles.

Are you sure it is a Vaquero and not a Bisley? Ruger does not list a Vaquero in 44 mag, they do list the Bisley in 44 mag though.
Actually after looking closer at the Ruger website, the Bisley is a version of the Vaquero. The manual says you can use any 44mag round. Not sure if I would want to run a steady diet of +P rounds through it, but nothing in the manual says not to.

You're correct, about the New Model Vaquero, the original Vaquero was chambered in .44 magnum.

The original Vaquero could be ordered with 2 cylinders 44-40 and 44 MAG, mine came with only 44-40 but had the option of ordering the 44MAG if I wanted. Ruger has the reputation of being able to fire the heavy loads.

Yeah this is the older model Vaquero chambered in .44 mag. I figured I could run all loads through it seeing how it is a Ruger. Just wanted to ask around before I did.

My experience

I've had the Ruger Vaquero .44 magnum shown below for about 7 years, and have shot magnum ammunition through it over that period. When you clean and examine the gun it appears to be built in a "heavy duty" fashion, with thick cylinder walls, barrel and frame. Given Ruger's reputation and the appearance of the gun, I don't have any concerns about using regular .44 magnum in it.

I noticed that when I was looking it over. That and it is also Heavy. Push come to shove you could knock out whatever is after you with one swing from this gun lol.

I agree...every loading manuel has a "Ruger only" data section for high pressure loads.

I have a Vaquero in 44-40. Like it but...

It is case colored. First time I cleaned it, the case coloring came off the loading gate, left it "in the white."

You have been warned...
