Old s&w .38 hand me down

Hey guys
Looking for some info on my grandfathers old .38
He's moving into a retirement home for his own good(grudgingly) and doesn't need to be armed. (legally blind and still renews his ccw god bless him!)

Will never sell it, but was wondering if anyone new anything about these old revolvers. would love to shoot it for sentimental reasons, but would like to be safe.

Not even sure of the model number. Will try to get some pics up.

S&W .38 revolver 6inch
on the barrel top S&W springfield mass. usa pat. feb 6-06 sept 14 09 dec 29 14
on the barrel side SMITH&WESSON 3 1/2tons .38 .767
on the butt 737088
on the top strap u.s. property GHD
hand chiseled sloppily into the side above the trigger-
OR543-16-0243ss

Any ideas or links to good sites abount these old pistols?

Looks to be in great condition.
thanks in advance
-mac

The following link will take you to S&W website. For a fee they will research it for you.
I believe the numbers on the butt may be the serial number.

I have my fathers .38. He bought in 1983 and maybe shot it 2x I am trying to get back my grandfathers .38 that he gave to my uncle. When my uncle got sick he gifted to a friend to hold onto until my cousin gets his license. Don;t think my cousin will so the .38 goes to me for the time being.

Based on the serial number, this revolver is likely the .38 Special Hand Ejector, Military & Police Model (forerunner to the Model 10).

SN range is 1940 to 1945 (most likely 1941 or 1942).

The U.S. Property & GHD stamps means the revolver was procured by the U.S. Government for military issue. GHD are the initials of the Ordnance Department inspector.

Thanks
Was just curious on what I had and if it was safe to shoot. (pretty sure it is but will have my smith look it over first)

Having trouble finding .38 ammo at big 5/GI Joes. Anyone know a good place? (When I first saw it I just assumed it shot .38 spl, but not so much!)

A1Ammo has some made by Magtech.

Magtech 38SWA .38 S&W 146 LRN | Ammunition: Pistol / Revolver

If you were closer I have a box that has been sitting in my safe for several years. Don't even remember how I came by it. Might have been some my father in law had.

a couple of years ago I had a S&W M&P model that was originally chambered in .38 S&W. It seems that thousands of these were manufactured during the early part of WWII for the Brits. Later, after the war, the surviving weapons were factory reconditioned by boring and honing the cylinders to length to handle .38 spl. And, the original diameter of the .38 S&W is noticably larger than .38 spl, but for the purposes of "guard duty" that they were used for they apparantly were considered safe. I got my info about my gun directly in a phone conversation with Mr Jinks, THE S&W historian.

Mine was SN 983216.

I unknowingly fired a box of .38 spl in my old S&W and the spent casings were often split and didn't eject readily (of course).

The best prices I've seen on the old ammo is at gun shows.
